Former Twitch executive djWHEAT is calling out the streaming platform's CEO, Dan Clancy, for his "gross" self-promotion.

The streamer slammed the CEO this week after he left self-promoting comments under several streamers' chats in a bid to promote a charity marathon. As seen in his comments online, Dan Clancy was trying to rally participants for the GCX Marathon, which aimed to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

To do so, he hopped on several streams and left messages asking for raids. One streamer even gave him a 10-minute timeout for his behavior, which the internet is now calling inappropriate, despite its good cause. Dan Clancy's message read:

“I am shamelessly going into chat of streamers I know to ask for raids when they are done. I am doing my first charity stream for St. Jude as part of the GCX Marathon.”

Here's how djWHEAT reacted on X:

“I can’t believe it. This goes against every bit of teaching I ever deployed while working at Twitch and it’s just gross. It actually angers me,” he said. “There was a time, though, when it wasn’t like this at all. It just seems like two steps in the wrong direction. It is basic decency that you just don’t do this, so it’s disappointing to see in any capacity.”

Dan Clancy's moves have since sparked outrage online, with many accusing him of wrongly using his platform to promote his own agenda. Some even claimed that the move, in turn, ruined users' experiences.

The Amazon-backed platform has community guidelines in place that prohibit users from spamming, and Dan Clancy's moves have left him banned from reportedly one stream, which prohibits him from chatting.

In the days since, the Twitch Support X account clarified its Spam Enforcement Note and Simulcasting FAQ, noting that all users are free to share links to their personal social media channels.

However, it did mention that the Twitch chat can’t be used to “redirect viewers to livestreams happening someplace else.” This means that users are barred from redirecting users to another platform altogether, such as Kick or YouTube.

As for Dan Clancy, his initiative reportedly ended up raising over $4,000 out of the total of $350,000 raised by the marathon. However, despite its success, GCX co-founder Gothalion took to X to slam the CEO's actions as well:

“I’m actually f**king upset about this,” he penned. “Like. I guess I shouldn’t expect proper etiquette when the ceo had zero comments on the Ray J botting situation." He added, Man. I hate that this is what the thing I founded has become. If real, @djclancy999, how did you not set up cameos and corporate support? Why was this reactive instead of proactive?" He continued, "Whatever. Gonna raise as much as I can for the kids tomorrow for the 10-year anniversary with my friends and cofounders. See ya then.”

As of this writing, Twitch has yet to directly address its CEO's actions. Dan Clancy has also remained mum, and fans will have to wait and watch for a statement. In the meantime, stay tuned to SoapCentral for more.
