F1 scores the biggest opening for an Apple film with over $55 million collection on Friday

F1 held its world premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 16, 2025. The film was released theatrically by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 27, 2025. Helmed by Joseph Kosinski and written by him along with Ehren Kruger, the film stars Brad Pitt as a retired racer who comes back to mentor a young driver. Here is the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,

Racing legend Sonny Hayes is coaxed out of retirement to lead a struggling Formula 1 team—and mentor a young hotshot driver—while chasing one more chance at glory.

The film has received a major opening day collection, which is the highest for any Apple Original film.


F1 mints $55 million on opening day

F1 collected around $55 million on its opening day at the box office, making it the largest opening for an Apple Original Movie. The number is ahead of Apple's second biggest opener, Killers of the Flower Moon ($23.2 million). It is also the second biggest opening in Brad Pitt's career, right behind his 2013 zombie film World War Z, which minted $66.4 million.

The film is produced by Joseph Kosinski, Brad Pitt, Lewis Hamilton, Chad Oman, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Jerry Bruckheimer. The story is by Kosinski and Ehren Kruger, while the latter also wrote the screenplay. The cast members include,

Kosinski appeared on the F1 Explains podcast, where he revealed how Lewis Hamilton told him the a lack of films that truly capture the racing car. He said,

"Lewis had said to me they had never seen a film that really captured the speed, the feeling of being in one of these things."

Kosinski and his team started looking for cars that could be modified to look like a Formula One racer.

"We bought six Dallara chassis from Formula 2 cars. We brought those to the Mercedes F1 team and worked with their engineers and designers."

F1 is currently playing in the theatres.
