It seems like Shane Lowry can't keep his cool when it comes to the PGA Championship.
During this Friday, May 16th's game, Lowry, 38, was on the eighth hole, as reported by People Magazine. The event took place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte and culminated in the Irishman being forced to sit out this weekend's game, which is to be the second men’s major of the year.
Per the outlet, Shane Lowry's tee shot landed in a divot located on the fairway. While he tried to smooth things over with a rules official, the latter wouldn't change his mind, forcing the player, who currently ranks No. 10 in the world, to continue swinging from the divot.
Upon doing so, he took his frustrations out on the area around the divot before slamming his club straight into the gap, effectively ripping out a chunk of the turf.
“F--- this place!” he yelled before flipping off his ball.

According to the Irish Independent, Shane Lowry is now left outside the cutline after rounds of 73 and 71, though, as reported by The New York Post, following the debacle, he managed to par the next three holes.
The golfer was seated eight shots behind leader Jhonattan Vegas, who, for his part, managed to shoot a 1-under in the second round. This now allows him to take the lead into this weekend's game in searching for his first major.
Speaking with reporters after the match, Vegas said:
“This is kind of what we put all those hours for. You put all those hours to give yourself chances like this. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do it throughout my career, but you never know. You’ve got to keep the pedal down, keep your head down, and keep working hard. You never know when things are going to turn your way. I know I have the game to compete in these big events. I’ve just got to do what I do, and good things could happen.’’
Shane Lowry also spoke with reporters about the incident, telling the Irish Independent that a reporter for host broadcaster ESPN had unnecessarily meddled in the situation:
“It was just that the ESPN guy was a bit too in there involved when he wasn’t asked to be and that’s what annoyed me a lot,” he said. “I was just asking the referee and the ESPN guy comes straight over and he’s like, ‘That’s not your pitch mark’. And I’m like, ‘That’s not for you to talk about. That’s for me to call a rules official and decide what happens.'”
He went on:
“I just said, to the rules official, what happens to the guy at 7:10 who’s not on ESPN Live? I guarantee you he’s down there arguing that’s his pitch mark. I don’t want a drop because it’s not my pitch mark. But I’m just saying.”
According to Bunkered, if Shane Lowry's ball had made it to its one pitch mark, it would have entitled the golfer to embedded ball relief.
“It looks like a fresh pitch mark that I was in, but it also looked like there’s a fresh one beside it,” he added. “So look, I wasn’t arguing that it was my pitch mark. I was trying to be 100% sure because imagine if I had to come in and all of a sudden somebody told me that was your pitch mark and there’s this one guy whose producers tell him it isn’t. You need to be just careful about what you’re doing, because there’s so much at stake.”
Shane Lowry's anger has been known to boil over in the past, such as when, in the 2023 Players Championship, he snapped a club over his knee. The following year, he got into a verbal feud with a cameraman at the Open Championship, as per People.
