Kate Winslet is finally switching gears as her directorial debut Goodbye June releases it's first trailer. An emotional ride that tells the story of a family, centered around four sisters and their sick mother, the trailer is already receiving praise from fans who are applauding the first glimpse's moving premise.

The trailer shows shots of Dame Helen Mirren, who stars as June, the matriarch of the family as she lays in a hospital, on the brink of death. As the family handles her situation, poignant moments make way as June deals with her end with humor and honesty.

With a limited theatrical release and a December streaming date for Netflix, the film teams up a star studded ensemble, including Winslet who stars as one of the daughters. Speaking about what the film is about, the actress told Tudum,

“It’s about the human condition. I hope that people will recognize themselves in the characters. It’s a film about family. Some of our most complicated relationships in life are with the people we love the most in the world, the people we are closest to, the people we need the most for support and care. In the UK, we struggle when talking about death. The power of a good goodbye is to remember to love each other in the present.”

Goodbye June is heavily shaped by Kate Winslet’s vision, marking her first time in the director’s chair with a personal, poignant story. With a script by Joe Anders, the film stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall and Helen Mirren, plus Stephen Merchant, Fisayo Akinade, Jeremy Swift and Raza Jaffrey.

The film examines a family that’s messy, complicated, and often at odds, suddenly thrown together without warning. They try to get through the crisis as best they can, even when they clash or fall short. For Winslet, assembling the cast who would bring this tangled dynamic to life was pure joy. She talked to People about how she found it thrilling to gather actors she’d worked with before and others she had admired for years.

Winslet has been open about what drew her to Goodbye June. In an interview with People, the actress revealed how she lost her own mother to cancer in 2017, and though the film is not a retelling of that experience, it certainly has had an influence. The emotional truth of that period shaped the script, even if the events themselves differed. Winslet says she recognizes the rollercoaster the characters face and wants the audience to "feel seen, acknowledged and entertained" throughout the narrative.

Goodbye June will have a theatrical release on 12 December 2025, followed by a Netflix streaming date of 24 December 2025.
