Before Brenda Song was serving intensity on The Social Network, she was busy being Disney royalty as London Tipton. But trading tiaras for lip glosses wasn’t easy. In 2010, when David Fincher cast her as Christy Lee, a college student and a Facebook fan, Disney execs were hesitant for her to go for the role. Why? Because her scene involved an intimate bathroom scene with Andrew Garfield’s Eduardo Saverin.

However, Brenda fought for the role, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And it was. The actress opened up about how she had to convince Disney to let her work on The Social Network and how the role was a game-changer for her career. Speaking to Variety, Song revealed,

“I was just like, ‘I am an actor. When you hired me, I was not a hotel heiress. If I have ever done anything in my personal life to ever draw bad attention to your company, I understand. But this is the last season of the show, and this is the opportunity of a lifetime.’ And I was so fortunate, they were so supportive. They allowed me to do this film that truly changed my life.”

She then opened up on how she lost on certain roles in high-profile films, one of which was Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino, since it had an inappropriate scene. Talking about that, Song added,

“The character had an intended s*xual assault scene, so Disney nixed it. And I was very upset but I was like, ‘Okay, I guess it didn’t work out.’”

When Brenda Song appeared as Andrew Garfield's girlfriend on The Social Network, it was not just a role that caught the eye of every moviegoer who watched the rise and reign of Facebook. It was also a role that changed Song's career trajectory forever. The actress recalled being dropped by her agents over the project, as she opened up on her struggle in an interview with The Wrap. Song stated,

"There was another project that I had booked when I also booked The Social Network and my agents very much pushed me for the other project. [They're] like, 'It's a lead role, it's a big movie. This is amazing, this is it.' They're like, 'It's two scenes,' but I'm like, 'This is what I really wanted.' And my agents dropped me over this decision."

In another interview with W magazine, the actress thanked David Fincher for changing her life with the role, as she said,

"It was one of those things where I just said, 'This is an opportunity that I don't think will ever come around again. 'The Social Network was not only career-changing, but life changing," Song noted. "I learned so much on that project. I could talk about David Fincher all day because he changed my life."

The Social Network is available to stream on Prime Video.
