Former late LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead by deputies on April 12, 2025, days after he crashed his car north of downtown Houston. As per the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the NFL player died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, one day before a grand jury hearing in his crash accident case.

At the time, Lacy was facing criminal charges stemming from a fatal car accident in Louisiana that took place in December 2024. Lacy was charged with killing 78-year-old Herman Hall. He turned himself in to authorities and was arrested by the police a month after he allegedly fled the crash scene. He was later released on $151,000 bail.

In January 2025, LSP said that Lacy "recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed," which resulted in a head-on collision and the death of Hall.

Kyren Lacy's attorney says player was not at fault

Kyren Lacy's attorney, Matt Ory, during an interview on HTV10 released on October 2, challenged Lacy's involvement in the December 2024 crash. Ory brought security camera footage of the incident and alleged that Lacy was 72.6 yards behind the vehicle at the time of the crash.

In the video, Lacy's car can be seen approaching and driving around the accident. Ory, while talking about Lacy's charges said,

"That's not how this story was painted. Never."

As per documentation provided by Ory of the district attorney's investigation into LSP's report,

"The evidence submitted in the report does not support that Kyren Lacy should have known his actions were the cause of the crash that happened approximately 72 yards in front of him."

Ory also claimed that while Lacy was illegally passing in a no-pass zone, he was too far away from the crash. Ory alleged that Lacy was 120 yards away from the vehicles involved in the crash. He also questioned LSP for not questioning another passenger in Lacy's car at the time of the crash,

"There was anotherp passenger in Kyren Lacy's car. They knew this. They have video footage of this individual getting out of the car. Why didn't you ascertain his identity? Why would you not want to hear the person with one of the best views of this incident? Why would you not bring him in for questioning."

Louisiana State Police, in a statement to WBRZ, claimed that they conducted "a detailed investigation with the assistance of crash reconstruction experts and with all the available information at the time."
