From Greg Biffle to Hulk Hogan: Sports personalities who died in 2025

This year, the world of sports saw a stark loss in some of the most prolific figures to have taken the industry by storm. Some of these were Hulk Hogan, who is largely credited with propelling pro wrestling into mainstream media, and George Foreman, the two-time heavyweight champion of the world.

Diogo Jota died at the height of his career, while Greg Biffle tragically lost his life in a plane crash. In this list, we're remembering some of the biggest names in the world of sports who died this past year.

Greg Biffle

Born December 23, 1969; died December 18, 2025 (55 years old)

Also known as The Biff, Greg Biffle was a renowned figure in the NASCAR industry. He died when his private jet crashed into a North Carolina airport, Complex has reported.

He boasted several titles, including 1998 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Rookie of the Year, the 2000 NASCAR Craftsman Truck championship, the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year, and the 2002 NASCAR Busch Series championship. He also won a staggering 19 races in the NASCAR Sprint Truck Series.

Hulk Hogan:

Born August 11, 1953; died July 24, 2025 (71 years old)

At one point, Hulk Hogan was one of the wrestling world's most famous entertainers. He dominated professional wrestling with his “Hulkamania” alter ego. Born Terry Bollea, he died of a heart attack at his home in Clearwater, Florida, after collapsing during physical therapy.

George Foreman:

Born January 10, 1949; died March 21, 2025 (76 years old)

The boxing legend, also known as “Big George," was a two-time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist. He was at the height of his career in the 1970s, though he made a comeback two decades later to nab the heavyweight title once again, at the age of 45. As of this writing, his exact cause of death remains unclear.

Diogo Jota:

Born December 4, 1996; died July 3, 2025 (28 years old)

The world of sports, specifically the soccer world, was hit with tragedy when the legendary forward for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team died at the age of 28. He was reportedly involved in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, alongside his younger brother André Silva. Jota was renowned for championing Liverpool’s domestic and European campaigns, as well as Portugal’s Nations League squads.

Rodney Rogers

Born June 20, 1971; died November 21, 2025 (54 years old)

The 12-year NBA veteran was most known for his scoring prowess. Despite a life-altering injury that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down, the All-American at Wake Forest was renowned for his resilience. He reportedly succumbed to complications from his spinal cord injury, which was exacerbated by an ATV accident he was involved in 2008.

Some of the other prolific figures in the world of sports to have died this year include Jeff Torborg, Ryne Samberg, Bob Uecker, and Fay Vincent.
