Last year, authorities foiled a plot to attack the thousands of fans in attendance at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Vienna. In the latest development with the ongoing case, a Syrian teenager has been charged in connection with helping to coordinate and plan the Vienna attack.
According to a press release by Germany's prosecutor general on June 27, the suspect has been identified as Mohammad A. and is accused of supporting a foreign terrorist organization and preparing for at least one serious act of violence. In the transcript that was first translated into English, per reports:
“Mohammad A has adhered to the ideology of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) since April 2024 at the latest.”
The statement continued:
“Between mid-July and August 2024, he was in contact with a young Austrian who was planning a bomb attack on a concert by singer Taylor Swift in Vienna.”
As reported by People Magazine:
“On August 28, 2024, a CIA official told reporters that it was confirmed that the thwarted terrorist plot was intended to kill tens of thousands of people.”
Luckily, a joint effort across multiple intelligence organizations, including the CIA, managed to prevent the worst-case scenario from materializing.
Taylor Swift speaks on thwarted Vienna attack, more
Taylor Swift decided to wait until the European leg of her Eras Tour was over to comment on the potentially horrific and narrowly avoided attack in Vienna. The Bad Blood singer eventually broke her silence with an Instagram post on August 22, 2024, after the “rollercoaster of emotions” of having to finish her five shows in London beforehand, especially under the circumstances. Her lengthy caption referenced the Vienna scare directly:
“Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
Taylor Swift went on to add:
“But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives.”
The iconic pop star also made a point to mention why she had remained silent until that point:
“In cases like this one, ‘silence’ is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it’s right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that.”
After the cancellation, Taylor Swift and the Disney corporation surprised Austrian fans with a special chance to see the Eras Tour concert movie in an added show of effort to make up for the cancelled show. The movie's free TV premiere in Austria is on August 10.
