With his take on Kendrick Lamar's Grammy win, hip-hop artist Trick Daddy has stirred controversy by claiming that the rap artist's diss track did not merit Song of the Year. He also provided his views on Lamar and Drake's feud and blasted the Recording Academy's decision during his appearance on The Beat Miami radio show on February 4.

Trick Daddy made it apparent throughout the interview that he did not approve of Kendrick Lamar winning Song of the Year at the 67th Grammy Awards. He was less thrilled by Kendrick's accomplishment, even though he congratulated Beyoncé on her historic Album of the Year victory for Cowboy Carter.

He stated,

“What I don’t agree with last night is why they gave Kendrick Lamar the song of the year... BET would never give that award up.”

To elucidate his position, he added

“I don’t think that Kendrick Lamar song was the song of the year.”

Due in large part to its involvement in Kendrick's well-publicized dispute with Drake, his song "Not Like Us" was one of the biggest singles of 2024. The song became a hip-hop cultural landmark and an anthem for K dot's fans. Trick Daddy, on the other hand, appeared dissatisfied and questioned the award's validity.

During the interview with 103.5 The Beat Miami, Trick Daddy said:

"Kendrik could never stand next to Drake."

He added that the song wasn't deserving of the honor. His take on this has stirred debates on the internet. He concentrated on the two musicians' long-standing feud rather than providing an explanation.

As this quickly went viral, a user (@MasefromTheWoo) replied,

"Trick got to get that hate out his heart. Him and that guy been negative a long time."

Others quickly chimed in. One user questioned why should Daddy's viewpoint be considered important since thousands of others voted to decide the Grammy Awards,

"Why would anyone care what Trick Daddy thinks or believes when 13,000 members voted and choose Kendrick to WIN."

While another pointed out that Trick Daddy didn't offer a convincing defense of the song's worth,

"Says Kendrick did not deserve song of the year for the NLU record. Did not proceed to tell why he thinks the song did not deserve SOY .. went on to make it about Drake and Kendrick don’t have nothing in common and how Kendrick couldn’t match up in a versus! I know the trick .."

Another user challenged Daddy to name a song that he thinks should deserve the award,

"What song then b/c the top songs i heard didnt carry like that record."

While another questioned Trick Daddy's integrity for criticizing an artist of Kendrick's quality, even if they recognized his right to an opinion,

"I respect Trick’s opinion as an artist his opinion in terms of holding weight isn’t necessarily on the level of Kendrick Lamar. And even though we are all entitled to our own opinions I think there is a certain degree of achievements and contributions that comes with critiquing."

Trick Daddy may have been skeptical, but Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" turned heads at the Grammys and swept five awards, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rap Song, establishing his legacy as an artist.

Trick Daddy's past controversies

This isn't the first time that Trick Daddy has caused controversy with his comments. He recently defended Nelly from criticism for attending Donald Trump's inauguration, saying the rapper was only acting in a businesslike manner.

He said that the financial advantages of such collaborations sometimes exceed public disapproval, drawing a comparison between Nelly's predicament and Kodak Black's work with Tekashi 6ix9ine. He said,

“Tekashi gave me $250,000. I would have done the verse for him. It’s not personal—it’s business.”
