Gwyneth Paltrow is getting candid about why her friendship with Madonna came to an end.

The new book on the Iron Man actress, Gwyneth: The Biography, by Amy Odell, details the rise and fall of the two legendary celebrities' friendship. The excerpts of the book were exclusively shared with People magazine:

“Their relationship reached a breaking point when Madonna showed up to an island where Gwyneth and Martin were vacationing," Odell wrote of Gwyneth Paltrow and her first husband, Chris Martin. "Madonna seemed to know that Gwyneth would be there, which Gwyneth seemed to find strange.”

She went on,

“Madonna then insisted Gwyneth and Martin join her for a big group dinner at a long table where Madonna went off on her daughter, Lourdes. Gwyneth and Martin were disgusted by the behavior. ‘I can’t be around this woman any more,’ Martin told Gwyneth. ‘She’s awful.' Gwyneth agreed that Madonna was toxic and ended the friendship.”

According to People magazine, the pair became friends when Paltrow, now 52, was in high school. At the time, the latter had been smoking too much in the late 80s, and Madonna, now 66, was asked to intervene. She ended up writing a letter to her that reads as follows:

"Dear Gwyneth. Just to jot down my average day...I wake up, I don’t smoke…And I go home a happy, healthy me. Love, Me, Madonna. PS: Good girls live longer."

The two women immediately struck up a friendship and remained close over the years. However, neither the songstress nor the Goop founder opened up about their now-wrecked bond.

Odell's book comes out this July 29, and it is based on interviews the author conducted with over 220 people, all of whom reflected on Gwyneth Paltrow's career, relationships, personal life, and more.

Back in 2006, Gwyneth Paltrow gushed over her now-estranged friend in an interview with Us Weekly.

“Everything I have gone through, she went through ten times worse and ten times longer,” she said. “She gives me good advice about how to say no and take care of myself.”

According to The New York Post, the two haven't been spotted together since 2010. However, the actress did allude to Madonna in April that year, while referring to Tracy Anderson, her business partner who also doubled as a personal trainer for Madonna.

“Yeah, it’s good that [Tracy] doesn’t train Madonna any more. It was too much,” Paltrow stated. “She keeps people waiting — it takes up your whole day.” She added, “Oh yes, I can be mean. I can cave in to gossip. I can ice people out and I definitely harbor revenge.”

That same year, a source told the outlet that the songstress and actress “don’t speak” anymore, though no further details were revealed.
