Halle Berry’s ex-husband confesses real feelings about their engagement

Halle Berry's ex-husband, David Justice, reveals the candid details behind their failed marriage and what could've saved the relationship. The former MLB player and the actress got married in 1993, but the pair divorced just four years later. In an episode of Matt Barnes’ “All the Smoke” podcast, he stated,

“My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast." Justice continued, "so, I’m looking at my mom - and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?”

Further talking about his thought process behind leaving the actress, he says,

“Then I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’ At that time, as a young guy - she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.”

David expressed how both his and Halle Berry's demanding careers got in the way of their marriage; however, if back then he knew about it, he thinks the couple could have worked on their relationship through couples therapy.

“We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it."

He adds, “We never had any major issues like that. It’s just … because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her.”

Halle and David had only been dating for five months before the actress asked him to marry her; however, he wasn't really sure if his “heart was really into it.”

He told Barnes, “I said, ‘OK,’ because I couldn’t say no. Who’s going to say no at that time?” adding that he “didn’t want to make her feel bad.”

Their divorce was finalized in June 1997. Halle Berry went on to seek a restraining order against Justice, as she feared for her personal safety and well-being. However, the former Atlanta Braves player publicly denied the allegations at the time and stated that he was not a threat to her life in any capacity.

Berry has been married three times and has been in a relationship with singer Van Hunt since 2020.
