Harold & Kumar 4 is finally happening, and the duo will be going beyond the White Castle. The comedy film series started in 2004 with the release of its first film, and its success led to its sequel, 2008's Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
The third installment, titled A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, was released in 2011. All three films have met with mostly positive to mixed critical feedback. Now the makers are working on the fourth installment, which has officially entered the development stage. Let us look into all the details about this film that has reportedly excited the fans.
Harold & Kumar 4 is in development
Variety has reported that Harold & Kumar 4 is currently in development and it's being directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote the first film in the franchise. The duo is also writing the script with Josh Heald, and it will be produced by Lionsgate Movies under the banner of Mandate Pictures. In a joint statement shared with THR, both Schlossberg and Hurwitz said,
“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all. It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
It's unclear if Karl Penn and John Cho, the lead actors of the franchise, will be returning as Kumar Patel and Harold Lee.
The first film in the franchise was in the stoner buddy comedy genre and followed two friends who try to go to the White Castle restaurant after smoking marijuana. The film was directed by Danny Leiner and also starred Neil Patrick Harris, Fred Willard, and Anthony Anderson, among others. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning $24.3 million.
Its sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, was released on April 25, 2008, and had Cho and Penn reprising their roles. This time, the duo gets wrongfully jailed in Guantanamo Bay while they try to go to Amsterdam. Despite a mixed critical response, the film ended up making $43.4 million at the box office.
The third installment, titled A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, came out in 2011. Just like the previous versions, the film was a critical and commercial success.
