Matthew Lillard is a successful actor whose Hollywood career has now spanned over three decades. While he has had several noteworthy performances, audiences likely know him best for his role as Stu Macher in Scream, or Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo live-action film franchise from the early 2000s.

In the latest news about the actor, Matthew Lillard has been called out by legendary director Quentin Tarantino, making the actor one of the many targets of the director’s recent string of negative comments despite the pair never having worked together on a project. While giving his list of the top 20 films since 2000 on a two-part podcast appearance, he had the following words about the Scream franchise alum,

"I don't care for Matthew Lillard."

The actor responded to Tarantino’s remarks during an appearance at GalaxyCon in Columbus, Ohio, on December 5.

"Quentin Tarantino this week said he didn't like me as an actor. Eh, whatever. Who gives a s---."

Matthew Lillard went on to add,

"It hurts your feelings. It f---in' sucks. And you wouldn't say that to Tom Cruise. You wouldn't say that to somebody who's a top-line actor in Hollywood. I'm very popular in this room. I'm not very popular in Hollywood. Two totally different microcosms, right? And so, you know, it's humbling, and it hurts."

While it’s clear the actor was affected by Tarantino’s words, his ability to stand up and speak out on the situation without putting the director down is a testament to his character.

Matthew Lillard on his return to the Scream franchise

Matthew Lillard's role in the first Scream movie is one horror fans have discussed in depth since the film’s release. With the return of several legacy characters from past films in the franchise, there have been rumors of Lillard’s participation for years, until it was confirmed he would be returning for the franchise's upcoming installment, Scream 7.

The actor opened up about his experience revisiting the franchise after 30 years.

“I’m nervous, because at this point in my life, the only thing I can do is sort of ruin how people consider Stu. [Especially] if I come back and I suck or I was lame."

Mathew Lillard went on to add,

“I haven’t seen the movie yet. I don’t know if it works, but it’s a risk. And it’s a risk that I was excited to take. At the same time, I’m nervous to see the outcome. I hope people like it.”

The much-anticipated film is set to release in theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
