"He gave us so much love" - Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi mourn the loss of their dog Augie

Although Ellen DeGeneres has remained out of the spotlight for the most part after leaving her iconic daytime talk show, she is back in the headlines due to unfortunate circumstances. Alongside her wife, Portia de Rossi, DeGeneres shared a social media post via Instagram to mourn the loss of their dog Augie, who died on May 16.

The post was comprised of a carousel of pictures of Augie, and accompanied by a heartbreaking caption that captured the couple’s distress:

“We had to say goodbye to Augie yesterday. We rescued him 12 years ago and he was so grateful. He gave us so much love. He will be missed. There will never be another like him.”

Augie was a Beagle-Chihuahua mix. Several people commented their well wishes, including DeGeneres’ former producer Andy Lassner and a longtime friend, Courteney Cox.

Three days after Ellen’s initial post, on May 19, the stand-up comedian and former talk show host posted another video on Instagram, this time of herself, de Rossi, and Augie, which was filmed a month before his death. The caption of her post read:

“Thank you for all of your kind messages about Augie. We filmed this last month and planned to post it today. I don’t care what Portia says, please don’t call me the Deal Queen. We love you, Augie.”

The video was initially conceptualized to be part of the promotional content for DeGeneres' skincare company, Kind Science, which is labelled as “Age-Positive skin care designed for all skin types” according to the official website.

The couple has a history of featuring their rescue dog Augie on their social media pages as he was a big part of their lives, along with their other pets. During the coronavirus pandemic, DeGeneres and de Rossi were on record saying that pets can be the best support system during difficult times.

Since Ellen parted ways with her TV career in Hollywood, the couple has relocated to the Cotswolds region in England, an area renowned for its picturesque village communities. Portia famously left acting a few years ago to focus on General Public, her art curation and publishing company that was established in 2018.
