Former NFL and Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has called the accusations "reckless," "false," and "completely unnecessary" as his ex-wife Kristin Cavallari's claims that she didn't get "a single penny" from their divorce. The pair, who announced their divorce in 2020 after seven years of marriage, have since rekindled public discussion on the financial details of their breakup.
Cutler and Kristin Cavallari were married in 2013, after dating for a couple of years. Their wedding in 2013 became a huge deal; it was also featured on Cavallari's show, Very Cavallari.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, in April 2020, Cavallari announced their divorce on Instagram:
“With great sadness, after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce.”
In 2022, their divorce was finalized, ending their seven-year marriage with three Kids: A daughter, Saylor, 9, and sons Camden,13, and Jaxon,11.
Kristin Cavallari's claim that she never got "a single penny" from their divorce
Kristin Cavallari, 38, talked about her business journey and lifestyle brand, Uncommon James, in an episode of Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour on June 18, 2025. Cavallari said that she built her company from the ground up without Cutler's financial assistance, despite the rumors.
In the episode, Cavallari discussed her business journey with her lifestyle brand, Uncommon James. She said that despite constant speculation, she built the company without financial support from Cutler:
“Our revenue is close to $50 million a year, but because I was obviously a WAG — athletes’ wives and girlfriends, if you’re not familiar — people love to say that everything I have in my life is because of my ex-husband, and that my ex-husband funded Uncommon James. But I am, to this day, 100% owner, and I’ve never taken any outside funding.”
She added:
“I have never gotten a penny from my ex-husband. I didn’t get any money from our divorce, so let’s just clear that up.”
Jay Cutler's response: "Completely false"
Cutler, who is now 42 years old, responded to Kristin Cavallari's comments on his Take It Outside with Jay Cutler and Sam Mackey podcast on August 15. He presented her arguments as implausible from a legal perspective, pointing out that courts and lawyers supervise divorce settlements. He said:
"Yeah, she didn't get a penny. She got a lot, a lot, a lot of (dollar) bills."
Cutler continued:
"It's irresponsible. I think it's reckless. It's borderline slander to insinuate that there was zero dollars split during the marriage that each side got."
Though Cutler didn't specify the amount his ex-wife received, he said:
"I can guarantee you it's definitely not zero dollars. You can go and see how much I made in the NFL. It's online."
In his 12 seasons of playing in the NFL, Cutler has earned $122.2 million. He went on to add:
"If we would have went to the judge and been like, 'Hey, he's going to keep every single dollar over the past seven years, and you're going to get nothing,' ... they would have been like, 'No, this isn't right. This isn't legal. Not happening.'"
Co-host Sam Mackey asked if the settlement was enough to survive on. Cutler replied, "Without a doubt," adding:
It's insanity. It's completely false, completely untrue. It just is. I've got a divorce decree," Cutler said. "(I) hate that I even have to address it, honestly, but it gets to a point where it's just untrue."
Both their claims differ, as Cutler has claimed that his ex-wife has received a fair amount. A source close to Kristin Cavallari told People Magazine that his Cuter's response was manipulated. The source said:
“His answer was manipulated into something completely different than what Kristin was initially saying.”
While Cavallari has repeatedly claimed her ex-husband did not fund her business.
Since their divorce, the couple have gone their separate ways with Kristin Cavallari focusing fully on her brand, Uncommon James, offering items like jewellery, clothing, lifestyle, and beauty products.
According to Cavallari, her company makes $50 million a year. She is also busy with her podcast, Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, where she discusses topics like health, relationships, and well-being.
While her ex-husband, Cutler, is currently an analyst on The CW Network's INSIDE THE NFL, and is busy with his own podcast, Take It Outside with Jay Cutler and Sam Mackey. He has been busy with his business and investments as well.
