Tom Hardy has been sober for over 20 years. The actor known for roles like Black Hawk Down (2001), Bronson (2008), Inception (2010), Warrior (2011), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) recently shared his health struggles.
British actor Edward Thomas Hardy was born in London in 1977. A very famous and successful actor, he made his debut with the movie Black Hawk Down (2001). He remains one of Hollywood's most sought-after performers. Hardy is widely recognized for his versatility and for undergoing significant physical transformations for his roles, but many don't know of his struggles and his road to sobriety.
After a police officer came to his school to warn pupils about glue sniffing, Hardy allegedly started taking narcotics at the age of eleven. He was already consuming beer and using hallucinogens by the age of 13. His dependence on drugs and alcohol increased as the years passed.
Tom Hardy was a frequent user of cocaine and alcohol by the time he was sixteen and had been expelled from boarding school for stealing. After his addiction got out of control, he was arrested in 1998 on accusations of car theft and weapons possession, which could have resulted in a 14-year jail sentence. He subsequently described the six weeks he spent awaiting prosecution as the scariest time of his life.
Luckily, a legal issue regarding a co-defendant's diplomatic status kept Hardy out of jail. However, the near-miss was insufficient to immediately alter his way of life. In the years that followed, Hardy continued his acting career, even going so far as to attend drama school with his parents' help. His addiction grew worse even though he was successful in acting and modeling. He acknowledged taking almost all illegal substances and famously said in an interview:
"I would have sold my mother for crack."
2003 was a turning point in his life. Hardy woke up in a London street drenched in a distressed and dangerous state after a night of intense partying. A doctor told him that if he continued on this path, there would be no coming back. That very same year, Hardy entered a recovery center and finished a 28-day course. Hardy has now spent more than two decades sober.
Tom Hardy's openness and his body transformations
Tom Hardy has been very open about his road to sobriety, often sharing and talking about his struggles in interviews. Around 2006, Hardy started speaking publicly about his addiction. In interviews, such as a 2010 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, he offered frank insights on the mayhem he could cause while being intoxicated and the state he would be in after abusing alcohol and substances.
Hardy’s journey to sobriety has not followed a conventional path and remains deeply personal.
Tom Hardy has seen drastic physical changes as a result of his commitment to his craft. He put on 40 pounds of muscle for Bronson, bulked up once again for Warrior, and supposedly gained 200 pounds to play the menace Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.
To gain weight rapidly, he followed a 'dirty bulking' regimen involving high-calorie foods, like pizza, soda, and ice cream, which had an adverse impact on his health. Even while it helped him gain muscle, it had a negative impact on his joints, heart, and overall health.
Tom Hardy opens up about health issues
In an open interview with Esquire published on May 9, 2024, he mentioned a number of persistent health issues and acknowledged that they might not get better. He shared that his work schedule had worn him down after finishing up promotional work for The Last Dance and MobLand.
Tom Hardy said:
“I got dizzy today. I took a Sudafed and it’s starting to work so I feel better, but in the interviews I was sitting there, and you know when you feel not right, but you can’t tell someone you don’t feel right? Like, ‘Listen, if I pass out…”
Hardy described a number of medical conditions, including a herniated disc, two knee operations, and a torn tendon in his hip. He stated:
It’s like, it’s all falling to bits now, and it’s not going to get better.”
He went on to offer a brutally honest reflection on aging:
“There’s only more, more, more. Of what? Stomach ulcers? Blood pressure? Your knees are going, your hair’s falling out, your teeth are wonky, you’re almost 50.”
These physical problems can have underlying emotional causes. Hardy alluded to unresolved issues with self-worth:
“Maybe it’s a self-worth thing, maybe it’s not finishing school, maybe it’s not being good enough. But all this ‘I’ll show, I’ll show’...Show who? No one cares. I know I can do it. Well then, chill out.”
Despite his candid remarks about aging and health, Hardy expressed interest in alternative treatments and remains proactive about his well-being. He added that he is investigating homeopathic medicines, such as tinctures and possibly stem cell therapy:
“I think if it comes down to the wire and it seems the sensible thing to do and I take advice."
Tom Hardy is now a father of three and is married to Charlotte Riley. In addition to becoming an ambassador for The Prince's Trust, a UK organization that aids underprivileged children, he keeps himself healthy by practicing martial arts and going to the gym frequently.
In 2022, Tom Hardy registered under his real name, secretly entered a Jiu-Jitsu competition, and won it.
