Emily Ratajkowski, who has one child—a son named Sylvester Apollo Bear—recently opened up in an interview with Elle about how she aims to constantly challenge traditional notions of what a mother should look like. In the interview, published on 19 June, the model discussed how she wants to show that there is no set way for women to dress as they embrace motherhood. She said:
"There’s so much around what a mom should look like."
Emily Ratajkowski welcomed her son on 8 March 2021 with her ex-husband, producer Sebastian Bear-McClard. The couple share joint custody of their four-year-old son, with Ratajkowski often posting pictures of him on her Instagram.
More from Emily Ratajkowski's latest interview, as the actress aims to defy expectations of motherhood through the way she dresses
In her interview with Elle, Emily Ratajkowski talked about how, although she does not wear heels when picking her son up from school, she dresses up more than other parents—particularly mothers—who are also there. She said:
"It's a little bit of a walk to my son’s school now, so I can’t wear heeled shoes. But, when I was in the city, we lived two blocks from his preschool, and I would often just leave for work from there. At that point, I was hosting my filmed podcast, so I would be in an outfit."
She added:
"Oh, I was definitely dressed up compared to them. I think that’s actually one of the ways I really enjoy being subversive with motherhood."
Emily Ratajkowski also reflected on this period of her life in her 30s, adding that she is "fascinated" by it. She said:
"I’m fascinated with this decade of my life. My mom had me at 39, and I remember she always romanticised her thirties as a time of self-exploration and power as a woman. I’m in the midst of it and really feel that way too."
In the interview, Emily further shared how she is excited about the coming years as she approaches her 40s. She said:
"You can’t control everything, but you can move towards something to give yourself the life you want, which really excites me, because when I think about 34 to 44, I’m like, 'Oh man, there’s so much opportunity.' I can be so much more intentional than I was in my twenties and there won’t be, like, accidents."
She also added that she doesn’t care about others’ opinions of her fashion choices—except her son’s. She said:
"I know what kind of mom I am, and I only deeply care about my son’s reaction to that. Anybody else who has opinions about me as a mother because of the way I dress – it’s just so inconsequential."
Emily Ratajkowski's new Netflix series, Too Much, is set to release on 10 July and also stars Will Sharpe and Meg Stalter.
