Kerry Washington has opened up about why she opts to keep her kids' lives out of the spotlight.

The actress, 48, spoke to InStyle magazine for its September 2025 cover issue, where she reflected on her decision to protect her kids' privacy. The actress shares three kids with Nnamdi Asomugha: daughter Isabelle, 10, son Caleb, 8, and a stepdaughter.

"It was very hard at the beginning. I'd look at a picture of my kid and send it to my mother: 'This picture has to be in the world, but I don't want to post it!' " Kerry Washington told the outlet. "When [my kids] started going to school and I knew I couldn't protect them every moment of the day, it was scary. But it's okay."

She continued,

"My 11-year-old was with me at the Beyoncé concert this weekend...but I'm not posting images of her. Our kids get to be who they are, not who the world has decided they are."

In her profile with InStyle Magazine, Kerry Washington also opened up about how she and her husband also opt to keep their lives out of the public eye:

"We live our lives and we are in the public eye, but we are still fairly private," Kerry Washington said. "Almost two years ago, we were at a couture show in Italy, and the house crew took a picture of us. I said to him, 'This picture is so beautiful. I want to post this picture.' And he was like, 'Really?' We had been married 10 years and never posted a picture of ourselves together," she explained. "We are both the kind of actors who are often trying to tell as much truth as possible behind the mask of the character. I feel like we are more protective of our real truth. That's not for public consumption."

Speaking with People in June 2024, Kerry Washington explained that her protectiveness over her kids mirrors how she feels about her husband, as the pair's romance only worked out of the public eye, she said.

“And I think in many ways, we just want to give our kids that same opportunity to define a life for themselves and to enter the public space in their own way,” she noted, adding that the duo is “not as protective as we used to be. They’re not, like, locked in a dungeon. They do, you know, come to set, we go places, we do things,” she continued. “We do feel like we want to give them agency to engage in a public life in the way they want to, because this is what we do. We’ve chosen to be athletes and artists, and that’s our choice. But we want to let them be kids.”

Back in 2019, during her appearance on Sunday Today, Kerry Washington did admit to having doubts about her decision, though ultimately, it seems like she stuck to her guns:

“I have moments where I take pictures or videos of one of my three amazing kids and I wanna post it online, and I tend to just send it to my parents or my shrink instead. I’m like, ‘My kids are so cute and I don’t wanna post about them, so look how cute they are!'” she exclaimed at the time.
