On September 16, 2025, Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor, filmmaker and environmentalist, died at the age of 89 in his Utah home. In addition to his illustrious Hollywood career. Now Robert Redford's legacy will live on through his two living children and seven grandchildren, the majority of them following his footsteps into movie making and arts.
Robert Redford's children:
During their marriage, Redford and his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen, an environmental activist and historian, had four children.
Scott Anthony Redford (1959)
The couple's first child was born on September 1, 1959. Unfortunately, Scott died just two and a half years later, as his life was claimed by sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) on 19 November 1959. Though Robert hardly speaks about is firstborn, he opened up about his death in 2017 to Esquire:
"I was only 21; my wife was 20. We were just starting our lives; I was just starting my career in New York. Of course it was traumatic, and how that plays out over time, I don't know. We had to deal with it. You have to move on. And we had other children who came. But something like that doesn't get completely dismissed. It probably shows up in various small ways you're not even aware of."
Scott was buried in the Provo City Cemetery in Provo, Utah.
Shauna Jean Redford (1960)
They then welcomed Shuna, their eldest daughter, a year later. Shauna attended and earned a degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. She wed Eric Schlosser, a writer and journalist who is well known for Fast Food Nation. They have two kids Conor Schlosser and Mica Schlosser.
Robert Redford founded an arts nonprofit in 1981, and in an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune regarding his retirement, he said that it "is going to be in the hands of my children." His kids, Shauna, Amy and Jamie would look after it:
"I've been spending a lot of time bringing my children — Shauna and Amy and Jamie — into the picture, and now they're there and they're in a position to run the show. Basically, they're inheriting what I started, and they're going to keep it going with my grandchildren."
David James "Jamie" Redford (1962)
Robert and his wife then had Jamie, their second son, on 5 May 1962. James was brought up in New York and would spend summers at his family home in Utah.
Jamie was a writer, filmmaker, and activist who combined storytelling with environmental advocacy. He had completed his undergraduate degree in creative writing and film from the same college as his sister, the University of Colorado Boulder and then went on to obtain a master's degree in literature from Northwestern University. He made use of his degrees in his work.
He got married to Kyle in 1988, whom he met at CU Boulder and moved to Marin County, California, after they had two kids, Dylan and Lena. By 1993, he received two liver transplants because of his illness, primary sclerosing cholangitis, which affects the liver and bile ducts.
He started a nonprofit, the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, to make people aware about organ and tissue donors. He even made a documentary to educate people on this topic, titled The Kindness of Strangers.
In the year 2005, he, along with his father, launched The Redford Center.
Jamie sadly passed away on October 16, 2020, and his wife, Kyle Redford, announced on X:
"Jamie died today. We're heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. As his wife of 32 yrs, I'm most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don't know what we would've done w/o them over the past 2yrs."
Amy Hart Redford (1970)
The youngest daughter of Robert Redford and Van Wagenen was born on 22 October 1970 and spent her childhood growing up in between places. She is an actress, producer and director. She still works in the industry. She directed The Guitar back in 2008. She was married to Mark Mann, a Scottish photographer, for 4 years, and later she remarried in 2008 to a theater director, Matt August. She has three daughters with Matt, out of which two are twins. She and Matt later got divorced after the birth of the twins.
