Mariah Carey, who has won five Grammy Awards over her decades-long career, recently revealed in an interview that she believes the Grammy awards are overrated. The confession came as the "I Don't Wanna Cry" singer is currently preparing for her sixteenth studio album, "Here For It All," which is set to be released later this year on September 26.
Mariah Carey rose to fame in the 1990s with her debut studio album, titled "Mariah Carey." Soon after, she earned her first Grammy Award at the 1991 awards ceremony, winning Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the lead single from the album, "Vision of Love."
Despite being nominated multiple times over the years, she did not win another Grammy until 2006, when she took home the award for Best Contemporary R&B Album for her tenth studio album titled "The Emancipation of Mimi." That year, Mariah Carey also won awards for Best R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B for the song "We Belong Together."
More about Mariah Carey's confession about thinking the Grammys are overrated
Mariah Carey appeared in an interview with Pitchfork, published earlier this week. During the interview, the singer discussed several topics and was prompted to share whether she felt each was overrated or underrated.
In the video, fans see the interviewer asking Mariah Carey her thoughts on self-driving cars, Hawaiian pizza, low-rise jeans, West Coast rap, Labubus, Billboard Charts, Google Maps, and Grammys, among many other things.
When asked about the Grammys, she said:
"I think the Grammys are overrated."
This prompted the interviewer to clarify whether she meant the show or if she thought the awards in general were overrated. They asked:
"The awards or the show?"
To this, Mariah Carey said:
"Both. But we love everybody. We love everybody."
Despite winning a total of five times, Mariah Carey has been nominated thirty-four times in various categories over the past decades. Aside from her five Grammys in competitive categories, Carey also received a Global Impact Award in 2024, presented by The Black Music Collective. While accepting the award on stage, she said:
"Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in soooooo long,” she quipped. “It’s weird. I don’t know. We’ll figure out what this is later.”
In a recent interview with People Magazine, Mariah Carey discussed why she previously had a problem with people calling "The Emancipation of Mimi," which received ten Grammy nominations, her comeback album, but now she understands the label. She said:
"At the time, it annoyed me when they called it a comeback album. But now I'm just like, 'Oh yeah, my comeback album. It's like, how many comebacks do I have to have?"
According to US Weekly, Mariah Carey has previously shared her opinion on why she did not win more Grammy Awards. During her appearance on the "Las Culturistas" podcast, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, she said:
"They scammed me. They toy with me.”
In her interview with Pitchfork, she also added that, according to her, the Billboard Charts were underrated, and she emphasized that they still matter to her even now.
