Actress and comedian Roseanne Barr’s documentary, Roseanne Barr is America, was released on June 10, 2025. Directed by Joel Gilbert, the film explores the life and works of the actress.
One of the important moments in her life that Barr addresses in the film is how she reconnected with her long-lost daughter, Brandi Brown. Her daughter was born when the actress was 18.
However, she could reconnect with Brown only after an investigation was carried out by the National Enquirer, a tabloid magazine. In the documentary, she addresses the incident, saying:
“When I gave my daughter up for adoption, I said to her, 'I’ll see you again when you're 18 because I’m not going to change my name, and I’m going to be famous. I’m going to have my own show named Roseanne.”
Roseanne Barr has five kids in total. Her daughters are Jessica, Jennifer, and Brandi, whom she had in a marriage with Bill Pentland. Her sons are Jake and Buck, whom she shares with her ex-husband Ben Thomas.
According to People Magazine, Barr said that her personal story became public when she got famous. The tabloid found out about her daughter by paying someone for access to confidential records in Colorado. Looking back, she didn’t feel angry about it and was thankful.
Reflecting on her first pregnancy, she recalled how her mother was worried about what the neighbors would think. Roseanne Barr found it ironic and funny later, considering she believed those neighbors had serious issues of their own.
In March 2024, she shared an Instagram post where she posed with Brandi Brown, captioning it:
“Oldest bb 52 yrs old reunited @ aged 17! GD is good.”
Roseanne Barr hired a private investigator to find Brandi Brown
Speaking to the outlet in 1989, Roseanne Barr shared that the tabloid called her to say they had found Brandi. Barr had expected that one day, when her daughter turned 21, she might reach out, and had even informed her other children a year earlier, since the girl was already 17.
However, the tabloid managed to uncover personal details like the daughter's school, adoptive parents, and location. They told the daughter only that her birth mother was a famous person, but had been snooping around and frightening her adoptive family.
Worried and upset, Roseanne Barr begged them to back off and ended up hiring a private investigator to find her daughter herself, hoping to protect her from finding out the truth through the press. The actress said:
"She is now named Brandi Brown, and she was raised by Stanley and Gail Brown of Denver. What was really weird was that Gail Brown's mother's best friend is my mother's best friend."
She went on:
"It was a small Jewish community between Salt Lake and Denver, and everyone had known about the Browns adopting a little girl out of Denver. They were friends with a lot of my family, but nobody ever put it together."
Roseanne Barr remembered the moment she and Brandi reunited. As soon as they saw each other, there was an instant connection. Brandi quickly got up, and they both ran toward each other. They held on tightly, hugging and crying.
