Oscar-winning screenwriter and playwright Tom Stoppard has passed away at the age of 88. The news of the Czech-born British screenwriter was announced by United Agents via an Instagram post on Saturday. The talent agency noted that Stoppard died "peacefully" surrounded by his family.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the playwright married three times. He first married Josie Ingle; later, he tied the knot with Miriam Stern and then married Sabrina Guinness in 2014. Tom Stoppard had four children, including actor Ed Stoppard.

The statement released by Stoppard's representatives read:

"We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved client and friend, Tom Stoppard, has died peacefully at home in Dorset, surrounded by his family. He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language. It was an honour to work with Tom and to know him."

As per Independent, the playwright was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937. However, his family fled their native place. He moved to India with his mother and eventually shifted to the UK. He started his career in journalism and eventually became a playwright and screenwriter.

A glimpse at Tom Stoppard's career

Tom Stoppard penned many award-winning plays and screenplays for film, television, and radio throughout his decades-long career. As per United Agents, his debut play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, came in 1966. He won his first Tony Award for this play. His latest play, Leopoldstadt, also bagged multiple accolades, including Oliver and Tony Awards. As a playwright, Stoppard won three Oliver Awards and five Tony Awards in his career.

The veteran playwright shared about theater complexity in his interview with The Wheeler Centre.

"I like performances to be strangely neutral. If I write a line [that] is sarcastic, if it’s delivered sarcastically, then it’s over-egged and the audience is being denied the pleasure of forming its own view of what the thought behind the utterance actually is. “[Live performance is] one of the wonderful mysteries of our culture and always has been. What I like to exploit, if I can, is the audience’s subconscious sense of the severe limitations of a theater stage."

Stoppard wrote his first movie screenplay for The Romantic Englishwoman. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Shakespeare in Love. In addition to his contribution to movies, Tom Stoppard also wrote for TV and radio.

For his impactful work for the theater, Tom Stoppard was knighted by the Queen in 1997.
