As per a recent article by Indie Wire, actor Brad Pitt revealed that David Fincher reinvigorated his love for acting during the shooting of the movie Se7en.

David Fincher is a renowned Hollywood director who has directed smash hits such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Social Network (2010), Zodiac (2007), and Fight Club (1999). Despite being nominated for the Academy Awards thrice, Fincher hasn't managed to bag an Oscar.

During Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, Brad Pitt mentioned that after delivering a few flops in the early 90s, he started re-evaluating his decision to be an actor in the summer of 1994. By then, Pitt had starred in films such as Cool World (1992) and Legends of the Fall (1994). Pitt recalled:

“I would wake up, I would get a bong load, I would have four Coca-Colas on ice, no food. This particular summer, I watched the O.J. trial, and I was just trying to figure out, ‘What do I do next? What do I do next?"

Pitt further mentioned that the early 90s were the most unhealthy time of his life, and he was reconsidering working in Hollywood at the time.

Pitt further elaborated that his will to work again was revived when his manager, Cynthia, asked him to go through the script of Se7en. He reveals in the podcast:

“My dear friend and manager and, basically my sister now, Cynthia, sends [the ‘Se7en’ script] over. She says, ‘You’ve got to read this.’ I read the first seven pages, I call her up, I go, ‘Are you kidding me? The cliché old cop wants out, the young cop comes in and he’s looking at his high school football trophies?’ She goes, ‘Just finish it."

After working with David Fincher in Se7en, Brad Pitt went on to star in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Fight Club. His next project with Finch was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which was about his fictional stuntman character, Cliff Booth.

Some critics and fans expressed their dismay when Tom Hooper's The King's Speech (2010) was given the Best Picture Award at the Oscars instead of David Fincher's The Social Network, as per an article by Collider. Regarded as a modern masterpiece, The Social Network is one of the most legendary films of Fincher's career, as per the publication.

Apart from The Social Network, Fincher was nominated for the Best Directing category for his films The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2008 and Mank in 2021, among others. 12 of the films by David Fincher have garnered a total of 40 nominations and have won nine of them. After the release of The Social Network in 2010, although Fincher delivered four other blockbusters, he was unable to secure an Academy Award.

As per Collider, the list of directors who deserved an Academy Award but did not grab any includes Paul Thomas Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Altman, Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, and Orson Welles.
