Keira Knightley burst onto the scene after her appearance in Bend it like Beckham, and has been a fan favorite ever since. The actress recently sat down with co-star Rosamund Pike to immortalize the 20th anniversary of the film’s release as part of a discussion series for Vanity Fair. Here, Keira interestingly recalls an incredibly confusing time in her career where she earned an Oscar nomination for one film, and was panned for her performance in another.

In her interview alongside Pike which was published on June 12, Keira Knightley shared more about that specific period in her career, and the cavernous gap in critical response for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice versus her performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. On the topic of the Jane Austen adaptation, Keira Knightley said:

"Yes, it was pretty big for my career. If people will come up to me, it’ll be about that one.”

However, her second turn in the Pirates franchise was not nearly as fondly received:

"Pirates of the Caribbean had already come out, but I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress."

In all, Keira Knightley has amassed two Academy Award Nominations during her career.

In her own mind, Knightley admitted to Pike in her discussion with Vanity Fair that she was bemused by her first ever Oscar nomination in 2006.

"So I remember it coming out maybe the same year, maybe around the same time as Pirates 2. And I got the worst reviews ever for that, and then also being nominated for an Oscar at the same time—it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing."

Keira Knightley was 20 year old when she received her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the third youngest person to ever hold the distinction at the time.

When Pike shifted the narrative to Keira Knightley’s 2002 Bend it like Beckham, Knightley was equally honest about her reaction to the reviews:

"I got terrible reviews for it—or at least the ones I remember, or the ones that, in your 17-year-old brain, actually sink in. Of course, it’s only the ones that are negative. So I think it was the first time that it had been unequivocally positive, right?"

On the topic of their joint work in the Pride & Prejudice, Pike fondly recalls:

"I just remember being part of something that felt magical.”

The Joe Wright directed film was re-released in theaters in April in a celebration of the film's 20th anniversary and lasting impact. More specifically, the passion-laced rapport between Knightley’s Elizabeth and her counterpart and love interest Mr. Darcy (played by Succession star Matthew McFayden) has allowed the film’s impact to stand the test of time.
