Broadway legend Patti LuPone has made headlines after making a few controversial comments about Kecia Lewis, another well-known Broadway performer. As the online criticism poured in, there has been a renewed interest in LuPone’s career and her many accomplishments, from her three Tony Award wins to her numerous celebrated performances.

During her impressive career, Patti LuPone has been nominated for the Tony Award a total of eight times, and she has taken home the award three times. She was first recognized in 1980 for the role of Eva Perón in Evita, receiving the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Almost three decades later, she was back in the winner’s circle in 2008 for her role as Mama Rose in Gypsy. More recently, in 2022, she won her third Tony, this time for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical as Joanne in the revival of Company.

Beyond her wins, LuPone’s nominations stretch for decades. She first appeared on the Tonys' radar in 1976, nominated in a featured role for The Robber Bridegroom. She was also recognized for her work in Anything Goes (1988), Sweeney Todd (2006), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (2011), and War Paint (2017).

More about Patti Lupone's recent controversy involving Kecia Lewis

Patti LuPone has recently been mired in controversy around comments she made about actress Kecia Lewis in a New Yorker profile.

The altercation apparently began over sound bleed from the musical Hell’s Kitchen, which was housed next to the theater where LuPone was starring in The Roommate. During this time, LuPone had dubbed Alicia Keys’ musical as being “too loud.

Following her statement, LuPone was caught off guard when Hell’s Kitchen cast member Lewis took to social media to condemn the way she handled the situation, calling it “bullying” and “racially micro-aggressive.

"Another thing that I’m aware of is that you dismissed publicly signing a fan’s Hell’s Kitchen Playbill because — 'I'm not signing a Hell’s Kitchen, they’re too loud.' I wanted to address this because this, Ms. LuPone, these actions in my opinion are bullying," She wrote in her post.

When recently asked about the past controversy with Kecia Lewis, Patti LuPone questioned Lewis’ credibility, implying that Lewis had no right to question or remark about LuPone’s statements.

"Here’s the problem. She calls herself a veteran? Let’s find out how many Broadway shows Kecia Lewis has done, because she doesn’t know what the f*** she’s talking about," LuPone told The New Yorker.

Patti LuPone even took a dig at the disparities between their number of credits, stating:

"She’s done seven. I’ve done 31. Don’t call yourself a vet, b**ch."

However, according to the Independent, The New Yorker later pointed out that Lewis has been in 10 Broadway shows, and LuPone has been in 28.
