James Bond is a franchise that has been going on for several years. The spy thriller franchise was adapted from Ian Fleming's novels. For the longest time, the IP was with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. But earlier this year, Amazon MGM paid $20 million to get creative control of the franchise.
This means that the fate of this franchise is in the hands of a new studio. Since then, the hunt for a new 007 agent has been going on, with several names floating on the internet.
Amazon MGM paid $20 million for the James Bond franchise
Amazon MGM took over the creative control of James Bond earlier this year for $20 million from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. While the two have given away creative control, they will continue to be the co-owners of the IP.
As per Variety, their company (Eon Productions) has shared some details in their earnings report. It reads,
“On 20 February 2025, the company entered into an agreement for the sale of its interest in the Bond franchise, all associated assets as well as its subsidiary companies, B24 Limited and B25 Limited. The total consideration for the sale amounted to $20 million (USD)."
MGM was bought by Amazon back in 2021 for a sum of $8.5 billion and subsequently acquired James Bond's distribution rights. Around that time, the company only had a 50% stake in the creative calls.
The upcoming film will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman, while Tanya Lapointe is the executive producer. Denis Villeneuve has been hired to direct the forthcoming installment, while Steven Knight will pen the screenplay. Knight is known as the creator of Netflix's series Peaky Blinders.
After the announcement, Denis issued a statement and said:
“Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since ‘Dr. No’ with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.”
Daniel Craig portrayed the character for nearly fifteen years, with 2021's No Time To Die being his last outing as James Bond.
