KaVontae Turpin, the All-Pro returner of the Cowboys, has been arrested. The Associated Press has reported that he is now charged with marijuana possession and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

The 28-year-old athlete was cuffed on Saturday, though he is currently out on a $1,500 bond. This March, he signed a three-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, making him the highest-earning special-teams player in the NFL, CBS Sports has reported.

According to Sportrac, KaVontae Turpin signed a $13,500,000 contract this March, including a $3,600,000 signing bonus, $5,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual income of $4,500,000. This year, his base salary is reportedly $1,400,000, and he has a signing bonus of $3,600,000. He also has a cap hit of $3,100,000 and a dead cap value of $5,000,000.

KaVontae Turpin's legal struggles explored:

The New York Post has reported that he had less than two ounces of marijuana on KaVontae Turpin's person when he was arrested in Texas, which is one of 26 states where possession of the substance for recreational use is illegal. Charges relating to this drug can culminate in up to 180 days in jail, as well as a fine of up to $2,000. Further details about his weapons charge currently remain unclear.

AP has reported that the athlete's career came to a grinding halt in 2018, after he was axed from his college team. At the time, news of the second domestic violence charges against him came to light. Allegedly having taken place in New Mexico, the charges were brought forth by a former girlfriend, who also filed the first claims.

He signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2022, and that year, secured his spot with them by returning a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in one of the preseason showdowns. By 2024, his career was at its peak, CBS Sports reports, as he returned 27 kicks for 904 return yards, one touchdown, 18 punt returns for 187 yards, and yet another touchdown.

As of this writing, the Dallas Cowboys have yet to issue a statement. However, per the New York Post, he may be penalized under the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, though this is likely to take effect when the legal procedures are over. PFT has also reported that, given the possession of marijuana, he is likely to undergo an increase in testing and possible fines should his tests turn positive.
