A few days before Freddie Aguilar’s death, his wife, Jovie Albao, shared an update about the health of the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) legend. She addressed the concerns of the singer’s fans in her Facebook post (translated from Filipino via Manila Times), saying,
“So much is happening this week, there have been many tearful moments, but we can't be weak just yet. I always have to be strong so I can watch over him every hour.”
She added,
“Our priority right now is Freddie's condition. I'm sorry I can't provide you with detailed information because this is only for family and close friends for now. What I can assure you is that he's in good hands and he's receiving all the medication he needs.”
Freddie Aguilar married Jovie Albao months after converting to Islam, per ABS-CBN News. The couple married under Islamic rites on November 22, 2013. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Albao was 16 at the time of the wedding and turned 17 on November 29. She and the Anak singer had a 43-year age difference.
Currently, Jovie Albao is 28 years old, while her late husband passed away at 72. As of this writing, the Filipino singer-songwriter’s family has yet to issue an official statement.
Jovie Albao and Freddie Aguilar’s marriage sparked controversy in 2013
The Diyosa singer married Josephine Quiepo in 1978, per the Manila Times. The pair had four children – Maegan, Jonan, Isabella, and Jeriko – together, but they eventually parted ways. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Freddie Aguilar married Antonette Martinez (19 at the time) in Las Vegas in 2000, a relationship that lasted five years.
In 2013, when the Filipino music legend decided to tie the knot with Jovie Albao, he faced online backlash. According to Interaksyon, Aguilar was criticized by many on social media for marrying Albao, who was younger than his youngest child at the time. Eventually, the Estudyante Blues singer ended up marrying Jovie, despite the controversy and negative reactions.
Apart from the public’s response, Freddie Aguilar faced another issue before marrying his wife. Per the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the singer lost documents related to his divorce from Antonette Martinez. He told the newspaper in an exclusive conversation,
“We’ve moved houses several times and I couldn’t find the papers. I’ve consulted a personal friend, who is a judge, and other friends who know the law. They told me that the loss of the documents could be a problem. It would also take a lot of work to (sort things out). It could be complicated.”
In addition to his three marriages, Freddie Aguilar was also briefly married to Marilyn Angelo before he exchanged vows with Josephine Quiepo. He explained to the Philippine Daily Inquirer that his first marriage was actually void because the priest who officiated the ceremony didn’t have a license. Freddie added,
“Our supposed marriage is not in the official records of Olongapo. A lawyer told me that this suggested that the marriage didn’t actually take place.”
Freddie remained married to Jovie Albao until his death on May 27, 2025, at 72. For those unaware, the pair stayed in Quezon City, Philippines. Albao, who is an alumnus of Manila Culinary and Hospitality Academy, owns a business named Asadela Cosmetics and Clothing and Asadela's Restaurant, per her Facebook profile.
