Lorde recently confirmed that she previously dated Justin Warren, whom she met back in 2009, when she was thirteen years old and he was twenty nine. The former couple, despite being linked for years, had never confirmed their relationship until Lorde's recent interview with Rolling Stone.

In her interview with Rolling Stone, published on 15 May, the Royals singer, although, did not mention Justin Warren by name, talked about the pain of going through the breakup, before adding that they parted on good terms. She said:

"I went through a breakup. It was so painful, as they are, but there was real dignity to it and grace and a lot of respect. It continues to be a relationship that I cherish.”

Lorde and Justin Warren, who have a 17-year age difference, were first linked in 2016, when the Solar Power singer was nineteen and Warren was thirty-five. The couple was spotted having a moment together at a beach in Auckland. Later, in an interview with The New Zealand Herald, Justin Warren vehemently denied the swirling rumors, adding that their relationship was strictly professional. He said:

"Ella and I have worked together for years and we're good friends. Any rumours of us being 'a pair' are ridiculous. Ella has a really busy year ahead of her and we'll be spending more time together as plans for the next Lorde record unfold."

According to Elle Magazine, Justin Warren, who met Lorde when she signed to the record label, is a music executive who currently works at Universal Music as the American promotions director for their New Zealand office. Since 2016, the couple has been seen at some red carpet events together, although they have always kept their relationship private.

In a 2021 interview with Vogue, Lorde revealed that she wanted to stay away from the spotlight and the scrutiny of public eyes, adding that she is not good at dealing with it. She said:

"To have a public-facing existence is something I find really intense and is something I'm not good at. That natural charisma is not what I have. I have the brain in the jar."

According to People Magazine, the couple reportedly split up in 2023, the news of which was seemingly hinted at when the singer sent out a message to her fans through her newsletter, writing that she had experienced heartbreak. The couple was last seen in Sydney in March 2023 and dated from 2016 to 2023. She wrote:

"I’m living with heartbreak again. It’s different but the same. I ache all the time, I forget why and then remember. I’m not trying to hide from the pain, I understand now that pain isn’t something to hide from, that there’s actually great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I’m sick of being with myself.”

In her recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lorde added more about her previous relationship. She said:

"I had this feeling that I had never been alone. There’d always been someone, not even necessarily a romantic partner. And often that was an older person. I was always choosing someone to be God.”

She further talked about how she has been reflecting on her dating patterns and added:

"It was a pattern I found myself repeating. I think because of leaving home so young and not quite being ready to be on my own. But I had this very acute sense that I needed to be alone to really meet myself.”

Lorde is currently gearing up for the release of her fourth studio album, Virgin, on 27 June. Justin Warren has not commented on the confirmation that they were previously in a relationship, following Lorde's interview with Rolling Stone.
