Model and Steve Harvey’s daughter, Lori Harvey, shared her PCOS journey on the September 16 episode of the SHE MD Podcast with Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. The 28-year-old socialite said women in general have been conditioned to suffer in silence.

Dr. Aliabadi asked how old she was when she started noticing all the changes in her body. She said her symptoms related to weight, menstruation, and other conditions started showing up when she was a teenager.

When asked if her sisters had PCOS, Lori said:

“One of my oldest sisters has PCOS, but it's something I think that's developed as she's gotten older. It wasn't something that she really struggled with when she was younger.”

Lori Harvey said when her diagnosis came through, it was also new for her and her mother as they learnt what the disease was all about. Harvey and many of her friends have the same condition, but despite that, there was not much awareness about it. She said:

“We're just kind of like all living with this thing and nobody's getting treated for it.”

At one point, Mary asked how everything changed when the diagnosis was finalised, and Lori Harvey said:

“I feel like just as women, it's so normalized for us to kind of just suffer in silence. And so, you know, I had seen doctors in Atlanta when I was there. I saw a few doctors in LA when I moved here. And when you keep telling these doctors who are supposed to be there to help you that you don't feel right and something's off and they keep telling you you're fine, it's almost like you're getting gaslit.”

Lori Harvey said that initially, doctors said there was nothing wrong with her body

Lori Harvey said that after meeting Dr. Aliabadi, she was diagnosed and given medicine that balanced her blood sugar. This helped her body return to normal so she could eat and exercise without sudden weight changes.

She said her hormones became steady, and for the first time, she finally felt good in her own body, the way she wished she had felt since she was 16. Before that, she had been seeing other doctors who said there was nothing wrong with her. She said:

“I was like, what’s happening? I'm like, okay, something is not adding up here. My body's trying to tell me something, but I'm not getting the answers that I need.”

At the beginning of the podcast, Dr. Aliabadi said:

“But we're talking about Lori Harvey. Do you know what I'm saying? That's what hurts me. That's why I have you guys come here because if you cannot get someone to listen to you and diagnose you correctly, do you think other women have a chance? They don't.

Lori Harvey shared that she used to have painful periods with strong cramps that even medicine couldn’t fix, and it made her feel like she needed to go to the hospital each time. She was told it was normal and to take simple medicine, but she knew something was wrong.
