Former NBA player Stephen Jackson said Lil Yachty had been "wack" and questioned him about using George Floyd's name in his lyric would make people like his "wack a** music." He also asked Yachty to never utter Floyd's name.
However, Jackson and Yachty have since made amends and exchanged apologies as per Jackson's 15 August Instagram story.
Earlier this week, Yachty, during an appearance on Plaqueboymax's live stream, played an unreleased track slated to land on his upcoming compilation. However, the track contained a distasteful lyric about Floyd's death.
"Put my knee up on her neck, I went George Floyd."
Floyd, a black man, died in May 2020 at 46, after a white Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his head and neck for nearly 10 minutes while arresting him. His death gave significant momentum to the Black Lives Matter movement.
In a now-deleted Instagram post published on August 14, Stephen Jackson addressed Yachty over the rapper using his late friend's name,
"Lil Yachty, bro. You been wack, my n***a. But you think you saying George Floyd's name, and trying to use his name in a bar, that's gonna make people like you wack a** music, my n***a? That s**t weak. Y'all the only era that feel like demeaning the dead and saying that s**t is cool, my n***a. It ain't. It's me and the whole third ward and the whole Houston, Texas, riding behind G man."
Jackson continued,
"Don't ever say his name, bro. None of y'all knew G. Nothing about him...That's some weak a** s**t, Yachty. Let somebody die in your family. We gon do a whole skit about it. It's only you wack Sambo a** n****as that do s**t like that."
Stephen Jackson had been vocal about his late friend's death, and revealed in 2020 that the two grew up together in the same Houston, Texas neighborhood.
"I salute him" - says Stephen Jackson about Lil Yachty
Stephen Jackson, in an August 15 Instagram story, revealed that he and Lil Yachty have talked it over and apologized to each other after the latter made a distasteful comment about the late George Floyd in his track.
"I apologized to him and we spoke and he apologized as well. He understands the outrage. Yachy's a smart individual, that's why he's been so successful...Shout-out to Lil Yachty for reaching out...I salute him."
In another Instagram post, Jackson mentioned that he "won't be doing any interviews" about his spat with Yachty and that they chose to move on from it.
