It's been three years since fans saw the last of Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and as fans continue to patiently wait for the sorcerer to return, we now have solid updates on the third film in the franchise. Brand new reports suggest that Doctor Strange 3 has entered early development, and star Benedict Cumberbatch might have more to do with it than we think.
Nexus Point News has revealed that Doctor Strange 3 is in early development. While none of this is confirmed, the word is that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing a more hands on creative role this time, especially in choosing a writer and director. One name he is apparently interested in is Sam Mendes, though that seems doubtful since Mendes is already committed to four Beatles biopics. Sam Raimi and Michael Waldron are not expected to return and production is not likely to begin until after Avengers: Secret Wars finishes filming.
We don't know much as of yet about what turn Strange's third outing will take, considering the MCU has been going through so many changes and events and where Strange would fit in the events post Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Still, with the latest updates, fans can b rest assured that development is going steady and we will certainly see more of our favorite sorcerer!
Doctor Strange's last outing wasn't as marvelous as fans expected
The second film in the Doctor Strange franchise had a tangled path to release. When Marvel first announced it, Scott Derrickson was supposed to return and the studio promoted it as the MCU’s first real attempt at horror. Fans expected something darker and more supernatural, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen sharing the spotlight.
In an interview with Friends From Work, Waldron had described Derrickson's version and said,
“[Going into the horror world is] obviously something that Scott Derrickson, the director of the first movie, does so well…obviously that influence, you feel it in the first one. Even though it’s not a horror movie, there is like this sort of spookiness throughout it. It’s part of what makes that movie work so well.”
But in early 2020, Derrickson exited because of creative disagreements, and that one shift changed the entire direction of the movie. Sam Raimi stepped in, Michael Waldron rewrote the script, and then COVID hit, which created even more complications.
The film's ending set up a continuation by introducing Clea, played by Charlize Theron. Naturally, fans expected Marvel to follow through quickly. But when neither Theron nor Cumberbatch appeared on the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, people started to wonder if Marvel had changed direction or paused the storyline entirely. As of now, it's not yet clear if Avengers: Doomsday will be tied to Doctor Strange 3. More details are awaited as of now.
