Hugh Jackman and actress Deborra-Lee Furnes were almost a picture perfect couple until headlines exploded the news of their separation. Not long after their split, fans speculated about Jackman's professional relationship with his Broadway co-star, Sutton Foster, as whispers of a possible romance did the rounds online. Furness hadn't shared much about the unexpected separation until this week. The Australian actress delivered a candid statement to the Daily Mail nearly two years after she and Jackman announced their separation. Following her filing for divorce on May 23, Furness addressed what she describes as:

[The] “breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage,” and referred to the experience as a “traumatic journey of betrayal.”

A source speaking to the Daily Mail on May 28 claimed Hugh Jackman, now aged 56, was:

“extremely disappointed” by the remarks.

“There was an unwritten understanding that she would not trash him to the press.”

"Hugh knows that he cannot change anything, and it is unfortunate that Deb feels the way she did given the fact that he caved in to all of her divorce requests."

Hugh Jackman divorce turns tense as Deborra-Lee Furness reflects on "betrayal"

In a heartfelt message shared with the Daily Mail on May 27, Deborra-Lee Furness offered a deeply personal reflection on betrayal, faith, and self-discovery. She acknowledged the emotional toll, an individual has to endure during challenging times like this:

“My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. It’s a profound wound that cuts deep.”

Furness didn’t shy away from the spiritual dimension of healing, saying,

“However, I believe in a higher power and that God or the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working for us."

She added,

I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose. It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom."

Her words also pointed to a broader life philosophy, one that helped her make sense of her sepeartion with Hugh Jackman. She said,

“We are all on our individual journeys and I believe that the relationships in our lives are not random. We are drawn to people, we invite them in, in order to learn our lessons and to recognize and heal the broken parts of ourselves.” She concluded, saying: “I remain grateful.”

In 2023, Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness publicly confirmed their separation after nearly three decades together. In their joint statement released at the time, the couple explained,

“Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth... We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love and kindness.”

They also made clear it would be “the sole statement either of us will make.”

Jackman and Furness first met in 1995 on the set of the Australian TV series Corelli, shortly after Jackman graduated from drama school. The two married the following year and went on to adopt two children together.

With Hugh Jackman’s split from Deborra-Lee Furness still making news, someone close to him offered a rare glimpse into how the actor is handling the separation. His best friend, Gus Worland, has known Jackman since they were kids and didn’t dodge the subject. Speaking with Ben Fordham on 2GB this Thursday, the Australian radio personality, shared his opinion.

“No one wants anyone to go through what he is and he is going through it publicly because of his fame, one thing I have been really strict on is to let Hugh and Deborra-Lee do what they have had to do. I was over in New York with him last month and he is fine. He is going along well.” shared Gus.

He added,

“He is moving on with his life, I hope Deb does as well. They were together for 30 years and have two beautiful kids together.”
