CBS Mornings News anchor Tony Dokoupil has caused quite the sensation after his recent comments during a special broadcast about the ongoing conclave in the Vatican, for the election of the new Pope. During a live broadcast on 7 May, Dokoupil referred to the cardinals coming together, in a rather Gen Z term, which has the internet in splits. The CBS Mornings News anchor said:

"I believe the kids call it raw-dogging it if you're gonna go through a long period of time with no electronic device."

Just last week, Tony Dokoupil's interview with Bill Belichick garnered widespread attention on the internet after the coaching legend was interrupted by his girlfriend, Jordan Hudson, with whom he has a forty-nine-year age difference. Jordan Hudson attempted to prevent any questions pertaining to their dating life, prompting a wide range of reactions, so much so that even Saturday Night Live made a parody skit on it.

More about the CBS Mornings News broadcast, as Tony Dokoupil uses a "certain phrase" to refer to the ongoing conclave

Tony Dokoupil, who co hosts the CBS Mornings News along with Gayle King, and Nate Burleson, was joined by John Allen Jr., who is an expert on the Vatican and the ongoing Conclave being held two weeks after the death of Pope Francis on 21 April.

John L. Allen Jr., who is also an editor at the Crux, was explaining the entire process of the election. During the live broadcast on CBS Mornings News, he said that there is not much political debate going on inside the conclave; rather, the entire time is dedicated to selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church. He said:

"We imagine in the conclave that there's all these charged political debate going on. No, inside the Sistine Chapel itself, virtually the entire time that the cardinals are inside is given over to the ritual of the balloting. Each ballot takes about an hour and a half and with this extraordinary number of electors, it will probably take a little longer."

It was Allen's next explanation that prompted the CBS Mornings News anchor to make the now viral comment on "raw-dogging," alluding to the fact that the cardinals are essentially made to go through the entire process without having any preparation or access to their social media.

John Allen continued, explaining that during the entire process, everyone is busy praying or engaged in spiritual reflection, and certainly not checking their Instagram, as they have no access to the outside world. He said:

"Most of them will tell you that while that's going on, they’re sitting reading their breviary, that’s a book of prayers that clergy have, or praying a rosary. The one thing we know they’re not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated."

The papal conclave, which is currently underway, did not result in the election of a new Pope on the first day, as was indicated by the black smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel. The process will continue until the outside world, waiting in rapt attention, can see white smoke rise out of the Sistine Chapel, signalling the election of a new head of the Catholic Church. On the other hand, the comments by CBS Mornings News anchor, Tony Dokoupil, certainly has left the internet divided.
