While speaking to SZA during a recent conversation for Interview Magazine, Chappell Roan said that she does get affected by the hate she receives online. The two artists bonded over their tryst with faith and other things when SZA asked Chappell Roan towards the end of the interview is she "gave a f**k about the backlash" she receives as a public figure, to which Roan responded saying,
"I didn't, until people started hating me for me and not for my art. When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make."
She continued,
"When things are taken out of context, people assume so much about you. I didn't realize I'd care so much. When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'B**ch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'D**n. Am I the most insufferable b**ch of our generation."
She later admitted that it makes her "cry" when she reads criticism aimed at her, and added that she doesn't know if she will "ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful" about her."
SZA, while responding to Roan's comments, said that she felt "relieved" listening to Chappell Roan since she felt like she was a "punk b***h for feeling the way I feel" since it made her feel,
"I'm just like, 'Oh, maybe I'm just not cut out for this s**t.' Because, 'everybody else who's cut out for this s**t doesn't give a f**k. But that's not true."
"People just assume you're the villain," says Chappell Roan
Her recent conversation with SZA for Interview Magazine is not the first time Chappell Roan has expressed her opinion on online trolls. During a previous interview on TS Madison's Outlaws in May 2025, Roan explained her mentality behind her wanting to set boundaries. Roan said,
"I cannot bear people saying I'm something I'm not. That's what's really hard online. People just assume you're the villain."
She went on to address trolls and questioned what they want from her; if they want her to become "agoraphobic" or "so stressed out, or so anxious to perform" since if she doesn't say anything, she might get to that.
The artist also highlighted the importance of standing up for herself, and noted that she will "quit" since she cannot "bear this", adding that she cannot bear people whom she doesn't know touching her, or following her.
