Basic Instinct is a film that put Sharon Stone on the map. The erotic thriller was released on March 20, 1992, by TriStar Pictures and grossed $353 million, becoming one of the most profitable films of that year. It was directed by Paul Verhoeven, while Joe Eszterhas wrote the screenplay.

Lately, there have been talks about a reboot of the film being in development. Sharon Stone, who had starred in the original, spoke about this project. Questioning the upcoming film, she said:

"I don’t know why you’d do it."

Let's find out what the actress said about the forthcoming reboot.

Sharon Stone talks about the Basic Instinct reboot

Basic Instinct is getting a reboot, and Sharon Stone is not happy about it. In an interview with NBC's Today show, the actress expressed her feelings about the project and said:

“If it goes the way the one that I was in, I would just say, I don’t know why you’d do it. I mean, go ahead. Good f***ing luck.”

In July this year, United Artists (which is owned by Amazon MGM Studios) announced that they have acquired the rights to Basic Instinct. They paid $2 million for the deal. Joe Eszterhas, who wrote the first film, is attached to also write the reboot. More details about the film are yet to be revealed.

The first film was produced by Mario Kassar and Alan Marshall and it received mixed critical responses. Despite that, it ended up becoming a commercial success and boosted the erotic thriller genre.

A sequel titled Basic Instinct 2 was released in 2006. Starring Sharon Stone, the film was made without the involvement of Michael Douglas and Paul Verhoeven. Unlike the original, the sequel was a critical and financial failure.

Eszterhas put out an official statement about writing the reboot. He said,

“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist. I call my writing partner the ‘Twisted Little Man’ and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”
