During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 22, Miley Cyrus gave credit to the host for letting her use his show in 2013, as a trial before deciding to do her viral 2013 MTV VMAs twerk.
Cyrus, while acknowledging how Kimmel has watched her grow through her career, said,
"Let me tell you, I am so happy to see you in my new era. This new era is very sophisticated and I have to tell you, your show allowed me to create the VMAs in 2013."
In the 2013 VMAs, Miley Cyrus, who was then in her 20s, stepped out wearing a fuzzy gray leotard to perform her single, We Can't Stop. As she reached the end of her song, Cyrus stripped down to a flesh-toned latex bra and matching underwear before twerking to Blurred Lines alongside Robin Thicke.
Her viral performance marked the end of her child star image, which she had created through her Hannah Montana era, and helped her grow as an individual artist.
While giving Kimmel credit for letting her use his show as a trial, where she performed in an outdoor show in June 2013, Cyrus said,
"I came here first and I kind of used the show as a trial run, you know, where I dancedsas a teddy bear like half naked, and everyone thought I was crazy. But to see if it was going to work, I did it here first."
"It became something that was expected of me" — says Miley Cyrus of her 2013 VMAs twerk
Her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live isn't the first time Miley Cyrus has opened up about her 2013 MTV VMAs twerk performance publicly. In July 2017, while speaking to Harper's Bazaar, Miley Cyrus said that she was forced to defend the performance, especially from Hannah Montana fans who were shocked at her transition.
"It became something that was expected of me. I didn't want to show up to photo shoots and be the girl who would get my (breasts) out and stick out my tongue."
She then went on to explain her motive behind the performance, saying,
"In the beginning, it was kind of lke saying, (sc**) you. Girls should be able to have this freedom or whatever.' But it got to a point where I did feel s**ualised."
The singer eventually came out of her twerking era and went through another transition when she released her single, Malibu. This time, Miley took on a more conservative, country girl era.
