"I'm grateful I had my sister" - Tia Mowry talks about the challenges of growing up as a child actor

Widely recognized for starring as Tia Landry in ABC’s 1994 sitcom Sister, Sister, Tia Mowry sheds light on her experience growing up as a child actor. Born in West Germany in 1978 to a British-Irish father and an Afro-Bahamian mother, Tia began her acting career at a young age. Her role in Sister, Sister, alongside her twin sister Tamera—who is two minutes older—catapulted them to fame while they were still quite young.

The 46-year-old Tia Mowry, in an Instagram Stories Q&A session on June 18, 2025, got candid about her experience growing up in the entertainment industry. Tia, who was previously married to Brotherly Love actor Cory Hardrict from 2008 to 2023, shares a son, Cree, and a daughter, Cairo, with him. While they announced their split in October 2022, their divorce was finalized in April 2023.

Tia Mowry, who is quite popular on Instagram with 12.8 million followers, was recently asked about her experience as a child actor during an Instagram Stories Q&A session. The question read:

"How did your experiences as a child actor help or hurt you as a successful business woman?"

To which the Family Reunion actress, Tia Mowry, answered:

Being a child actor "definitely came with its pros and cons."

She continued:

”On the plus side, it taught me responsibility early on. By the time I got to college, I already knew what it meant to show up for work, have call times, and stay disciplined."

While addressing the negative aspects, Tia further elaborated:

"But growing up in front of the world? That part was tough. You're still figuring out who you are, and everyone has an opinion."

Tia Mowry, while mentioning her sister Tamera and her family, added:

"I'm grateful I had my sister and family to keep me grounded. But... I didn't get to experience childhood the same way, especially when it came to things like dating. I was focused on work. And while I'm proud of that, I also think kids need space to just be kids and learn who they are."

Tia Mowry shares what she loves most about acting

In the same Instagram Stories Q&A session on June 18, Tia Mowry was asked another question about what she loves most about acting. The People’s Choice Award-nominated actress answered that it’s the “process” she enjoys the most. However, Tia further added:

"I love how one small idea turns into something so much bigger through collaboration."

Speaking about the various roles she’s played throughout her career, Tia said:

"You bring in a director, writers, set designers, wardrobe, and suddenly you're creating something powerful as a community. It's not just you, it's all of you."

She went ahead and explained:

"Then comes the beautiful part: letting it go. You build these connections, these memories, and at the end, you have something to share with the world. That's what makes it so special."
