Amazon MGM Studios' I Play Rocky has onboarded two brand new actors for the biographical film, who will take part in bringing Sylvester Stallone's Rocky's behind-the-scenes to life. The studio has added Eik Palladino, known for his work on Godfather of Harlem and Rob Demery, known for his role on Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.
Palladino is stepping in as Stallone's boxing coach Pete, while Demery will star as Joe Frazier, the boxer who had a short but memorable role in the film, and who also served as some of the inspiration behind the film's action. They are joined by Anthony Ippolito, who stars as Stallone.
Produced by Amazon's MGM Studios, I Play Rocky dives into the story behind one of Hollywood’s greatest underdog triumphs, when a struggling actor named Sylvester Stallone refused to let anyone else play his now-iconic role. Ippolito leads the cast as a young Stallone, capturing his relentless determination to turn his script into reality. The film follows Stallone’s fight to be seen not only as the writer of Rocky, but as its heart and soul, the man meant to embody the struggling boxer who changed cinema forever.
Joining Ippolito is an ensemble stacked with talent. Stephan James plays Carl Weathers, while AnnaSophia Robb portrays Sasha Czack, Stallone’s first wife. Matt Dillon steps into the role of Stallone’s father, Frank Stallone Sr., with P.J. Byrne as producer Irwin Winkler and Toby Kebbell as Robert Chartoff. Tracy Letts appears as Sandy Maddox, Jay Duplass as director John G. Avildsen, and Kiki Seto as Talia Shire. Rounding out the cast are Robert Morgan as Burgess Meredith, Saul Stein as Sal and Trevor St. John as Grant Bader.
More details about the inspiration behind I Play Rocky
I Play Rocky is inspired by Stallone's legendary franchise Rocky, which became Hollywood's most iconic franchise, and the biggest part of the actor's career. Released in 1976, the film was directed by John G. Avildsen and written by and starring Stallone himself. The film launched one of cinema’s most beloved franchises and introduced audiences to Rocky Balboa, a small-time club fighter and part-time debt collector from Philadelphia who gets an unexpected chance to fight for the world heavyweight title against the reigning champion, Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers.
However, Stallone has noted that he is in no way involved with the film as he told The Playlist,
“I was shocked to read [about] it. I have zero to do with it. Since I lived it, I thought I might be able to participate and give them some insight.”
Against all odds, Rocky captured the essence of the American dream, the belief that determination can overcome even the steepest obstacles. What started as a scrappy independent project became a global sensation, proving that sometimes, the greatest victories are born from sheer faith in oneself. Seeing that, it will be interesting to see how it brings I Play Rocky to life. More details about the film are awaited for now.
