While at the Epic Universe Celestial Carpet Opening Celebration event in Orlando, JoJo Siwa stopped to talk with reporters. In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, Siwa recalled that before she decided to appear on Celebrity Big Brother UK, those closest to her were not on board:
“It's funny because going into the experience, nobody on my team wanted me to do it, and everyone tried to discourage me from doing it.”
Despite that, the 22-year-old had made up her mind and would not be deterred.
“But for some reason, I was really set on doing it. Right before I went in, the last thing I told my mom is, I said, ‘Mom, I think this is going to be the best thing I've ever done in my life’…and I think I was accurate on that.”
Regardless of the viewers’ perceptions, it's clear Siwa is at peace with the decision she was adamant about fighting for.
JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes at a glance
Siwa had notable moments on the show, most of which revolved around her sexual orientation and relationship with housemate and Love Island alum Chris Hughes. First, she claimed to have realised on the show that she was she was now queer rather than a lesbian, and shared the revelation with Danny Beard, her co-star and former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant.
"I'm switching letters! I've dropped the L and I've gone to the Q baby! That's what I love about sexuality."
Once the season was done, Siwa and Hughes then came out to dispel any rumors of a real-life romance in a joint interview with UK-based This Morning:
“He’s a gorgeous boy … Look, he’s a great guy. It is platonic, we have a lot of fun together. Life is life, and I don’t know any future of anything. But, I’m really grateful for our dynamic that we have in our bond that we have, and whatever life does, life will do.”
However, on May 22, The Sun published a photo purporting to show Siwa and Hughes kissing in a pool at a Mexican hotel, though the individuals in the image are not confirmed to be the reality stars. Siwa also posted an Instagram carousel heavily featuring Hughes and capturing clear moments of intimacy between the two.
As Siwa shared with PEOPLE at the Celebration event in Orlando:
“I'm in such a great place. I'm so, so happy. I said to somebody the other day, ‘I don't think humans are meant to feel this happy,’ and that somebody was like, ‘No. I think you are actually,’ and that's... Yeah. It's good happy."
It is unclear what is building underneath the surface between the two, but it seems they are happy and content.
