"I did it three movies in a row, maybe four" - Wes Anderson reveals how he tried to get Jodie Foster onboard 'so many movies'

Wes Anderson has established himself as a filmmaking icon, typically enhancing his storytelling prowess with incredible A-list ensemble casts. In a recent interview with Collider promoting his latest film The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson was asked about his dream collaborator, and his response may be surprising. Upon hearing the question, Anderson took a measured pause before revealing his thoughts.

“I probably shouldn't share. Over the years, I had so many movies that I tried to get Jodie Foster to be in.”

The 56-year-old visionary continued,

“I think I did it three movies in a row, maybe four. And I met her, and I liked her. And I thought it was going to get her. And I think she's just great.”

Wes Anderson is clearly a strong supporter of Foster’s talents and reveals that he and his team reached out to offer her a role in “every movie” he made. Out of respect for the actors who were eventually cast, Wes Anderson took care not to disclose which specific films he believed her contributions would have enhanced the most.

At the 2024 Academy Awards, both Wes Anderson and Jodie Foster were recognized for their outstanding work. Foster attended as a nominee for her supporting role in Nyad, while Wes Anderson won his first Oscar for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar in the Best Live Action Short category.

Building on his earlier statements, Wes also informed Collider that he “still would like to get Jodie Foster” as a cast member in one of his future projects. Reflecting on why it hasn’t happened for the two so far, Anderson speculated,

“Sometimes somebody has an idea of the kind of work they want to do at that time in his or her life, and we weren't right. But anyway, she’s pretty amazing.”

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme premiered in the United States on May 30 and has received generally favorable reviews. The official synopsis reads as follows:

Benicio del Toro plays the lead role and is joined by an extremely talented supporting cast. Meanwhile, Foster premiered her latest French thriller, Vie Privée, at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20. The two-time Oscar winner portrays a therapist who becomes convinced that a patient’s suicide was actually a murder. A release date has yet to be announced for this project.
