Richard Dreyfuss did not attend this year’s SharkCon after coming down with viral bronchitis. The 77-year-old Jaws star was originally scheduled to join the National Geographic-sponsored convention in Tampa, Florida, on July 12 and 13 for photo ops and autograph signings.

In a video shared by the event’s official Instagram, Richard Dreyfuss explained that he was advised against traveling. He said from what appeared to be a hospital bed:

“I’ve been diagnosed with viral bronchitis. I’ve been told by my doctors I cannot fly, and I would have to fly five hours to get there.”

Though disappointed, the Oscar winner made it clear that his decision was for the greater good.

“I didn’t want to get anyone else sick and I didn’t want to get sicker myself. I feel terrible about not showing up, and I’d feel worse about exposing you to this apparently very viral illness.”

Trying to keep spirits light, the Murder at Yellowstone City star quipped:

“But there will be other times and I will make it my business to show up. And I want to wish you all good luck and happiness and I want you all to feel very sorry for me, and very sorry for yourselves. I’m in a lot of pain and that has to come first, my health. I feel very good about having the time and enough health.”

The veteran icon ended by expressing gratitude for the fans and promising to attend another time. Richard Dreyfuss’ wife, Svetlana Erokhin, also chimed in during the clip to acknowledge the actor’s “great fans.”

The comment section quickly filled with well-wishes from fans and fellow stars alike, including Sharon Stone and Rosie O’Donnell, who sent their support for a smooth recovery.

“Gotta take care of yourself, man”: Richard Dreyfuss’ fans flood social media with love after SharkCon exit

Following his abrupt cancellation, fans quickly took to social media to send Richard Dreyfuss love and comforting messages.

“Wow.. Getting sick does suck. Gotta take care of yourself man,” @JayBayMcC posted.
“We met Richard at a convention several years ago. Very opinionated but nice guy when you get to know him. When he walks in on sets, he yells ‘DIRTY N**I B**TARDS!’ A character and a brilliant actor,” @horrormuseum said.
“I grew up having bronchitis all the time. Viral too. Its nothing. Just fever and throwing up, its more of a nuiscence than an illness. Stay hydrated richard, eating chinese vegetable soup, and take your meds. Itll pass. And then you'll be immune to it like i am,” @rightcntrl wrote.
“I love this actor!! JAWS. Stand by me. Cmon folks. This is like John Ritter Bill Paxton level. Prayers for Richard for a speedy recovery,” @dueycheatm216 tweeted.
“Your health is the most important thing. Hoping you get well soon! Sending positive vibes,” @nickscom01 chimed in.
“An absolute legend… praying for him to feel better… We aren’t ready man… you got this,” @DanishDesign added.

Meanwhile, despite Richard Dreyfuss' absence in SharkCon, the event continued with appearances from fellow Jaws alums Jeffrey Voorhees, John Putch, and John Dukakis.
