By the time Cher and Alexander “AE” Edwards made their relationship public in November 2022, they had already grown accustomed to being the center of attention. The pair had been seen together in Los Angeles, confirming months of speculation. Edwards’ past, including his public admission of cheating on Amber Rose, didn’t seem to shake Cher’s confidence in him.

The singer brushed off the criticism with directness. “BABE ENGLISH IS MY FIRST LANGUAGE,” she wrote in response to a fan’s comment on X.

“IM [sic] IN ♥️NOT BLINDED BY IT. KNOW WHAT I KNOW….SMOKE DOESNT [sic] ALWAYS MEAN🔥.”

Behind the scenes, those close to the singer said she was unfazed by the headlines. A source told US Weekly.

“Cher knows full well that there’s a lot of skepticism about this romance but she couldn’t care less,”
“She’s reveling in the attention and saying that she and AE have something very special going on that’s made her feel more alive and sexier than ever.”

Critics often mentioned the couple’s 40-year age gap, but according to the insider, it was nothing new for the star.

“She’s always been drawn to younger guys, and this is by no means the first fun, no strings attached fling she’s had in recent years, the difference here is that this one feels special, which is why she felt confident to go public as a couple,” the source explained.

Amber Rose appeared to have moved on peacefully from her past with Alexander “AE” Edwards. As People reported in 2024, the model said she bore no grudge toward her ex or his relationship with Cher. During her chat with Jason Lee on The Jason Lee Podcast, Rose spoke about co-parenting their son, Slash, whom she shares with Edwards. The pair split in 2021 after three years together.

“I’m very happy that he’s with Cher because it creates stability for when [our] son goes over there,” Rose shared.

“That it’s not all mayhem and stuff,” she added, referring to the environment their son experiences when spending time with Edwards and the pop superstar. Their breakup in 2021 had been anything but quiet. As People reported at the time, Rose accused Edwards of cheating with “at least 12 different people,” later posting a candid message on Instagram about her frustration.

“I'm tired of getting cheated on and being embarrassed behind the scenes,” she wrote.
"All 12 of y'all bums (the ones that I know of there's probably more) can have him, y'all very much knew he was in a relationship with a baby and y'all decided to f**k him anyway. I saw all the texts and DM's. Y'all were well aware but y'all don't owe me any loyalty so it's whatever," she continued.

Though she stopped short of naming anyone, Rose made it clear she was ready to close that chapter.

“I can't be the only one fighting for my family anymore, I've been so loyal and transparent but I haven't gotten the same energy in return. As for him... The lack of loyalty and the disrespect is ridiculous and I'm done,” she wrote.

Cher reflects on her early love story with Sonny Bono and the lessons that came after:

As Elle once noted, Cher has lived a life filled with passion and fame. She had been married twice, to Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, and became a mother to one child from each marriage. Through the years, her relationships came and went, but many ended on friendly terms.

Her story with Sonny Bono began in 1962, under circumstances that could have come straight from a film. “I was with my girlfriend, who was really beautiful,” Cher recalled during The Cher Show: Making the Musical.

“He liked her so he didn’t really say anything to me. He was like, ‘Oh yeah, kid.’”

Not long after, Bono moved in next door just as Cher found herself without a place to stay. Having left school to pursue her dreams in Los Angeles, she turned to him for help.

“I just went up and said, ‘Hi, listen, I’m going to have to move out of our apartment ’cause I’m sick, and I don’t have any money and I don’t want to go home and I just want to get out and do things, and I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I don’t have any place to live and blah blah blah, and [Bono] said, ‘Can you cook and clean?’”

Cher agreed, even though she wasn’t exactly the domestic type. “You can stay in my house. I don’t find you particularly attractive,” she remembered him saying.

“And I said, ‘Okay.’ And I didn’t cook, but he did.”

Two years later, they were married, and their partnership quickly turned into a phenomenon. Bono introduced her to Phil Spector, helping launch Sonny & Cher in 1965. They welcomed their son, Chaz, in 1969, and by 1971, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour made them household names. Years later, the singer told Parade that fame eventually came between them.

“He didn’t want me to grow up or have any freedom, I wasn’t allowed to do anything except work. We worked more than we lived, stardom made Sonny a huge womanizer. One woman, or even five, was not enough for him. I found all this out afterward. I asked him, ‘How did you manage the logistics?’ I was trusting and faithful with him. The truth is, I’m not so sure we should’ve ever been husband and wife,” she shared.

By 1974, the singer had filed for divorce, citing “involuntary servitude.” Despite their painful split, time softened the edges, and the two later settled into an amicable friendship.
