Bound for Glory is an upcoming coming-of-age drama film that is being directed by Michael Naizu and John Wilcox (who is Naizu's brother). The film will star Janel Parrish opposite Naizu in the lead role. Parrish is known for her roles in movies and shows like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Pretty Little Liars.
Here is its official synopsis:
“A mixed-race, working-class couple in crisis, interweaving themes of identity, codependency and generational expectation.”
Naizu and Parrish have previously worked together in the romantic comedy film Christmas Is Canceled, which came out in 2020. Let us explore more details about the upcoming film.
Janel Parrish to star in Bound for Glory
The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Janel Parrish has been cast in the lead role opposite Michael Naizu in Bound for Glory. In an official statement, the actress said:
“So happy to be working with Michael Naizu again, this time to tell his beautiful and compelling story. It means so much to collaborate with AAPI storytellers and help bring narratives to life that reflect who we are and why representation matters.”
The film is an adaptation of the namesake 2020 short film, which was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Derik Young is producing it under his banner, Luber Roklin Entertainment. Sean Casey and Charlie Waddell will serve as executive producers.
Naizu also spoke about the film in an official statement. He said,
“This is a story I’ve been trying to tell my whole life. It’s deeply personal, rooted in my experience navigating identity and purpose in an industry that is extremely competitive and volatile. To now be making this film with my brother John, my childhood best friend Derik, and Janel Parrish — someone I’ve admired for years — it feels like everything is coming full circle.
He added,
"To have Bound For Glory backed by a trailblazing organization like Gold House is incredibly meaningful. I honestly can’t wait to get cameras up and bring this story to life.”
The production of the film is expected to start this year's fall in cities like Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. Its storyline is inspired by Naizu’s real-life experience as a Chinese American in the show business. We can expect the film to touch upon the socio-political situation of a man of mixed race as he tries to get into Hollywood.
