Spencer Pratt, who once gained mainstream fame for being one of the biggest reality TV villains, has now decided to be the voice for change. The reality television villain turned content creator confirmed in an Instagram post that he will be running for mayor of Los Angeles. His decision stemmed from losing his home in last year’s Palisades fire.

Pratt, who has had his share of controversies since starring in reality TV shows like The Hills, had been criticizing California’s liberal leaders for their failure to manage last January’s wildfires in a better way, as per a report shared by The New York Times. He addressed several fire survivors at a rally marking the first anniversary of the disaster.

“The system in Los Angeles isn’t struggling, it’s fundamentally broken. It is a machine designed to protect the people at the top and the friends they exchange favors with while the rest of us drown in toxic smoke and ash.”

Spencer Pratt's political ambitions placed his past controversies back under the spotlight, but not without a fair share of support. His Instagram post with the caption:

"Yes, it’s official. Papers are filed and campaign is open: mayorpratt.com"

Were filled with comments from fans, excited and hopeful for a genuine change.

"Amazing and we all stand behind you," shared Dani Klass.
"YEAHHHHH BUDDY LETS GO!!!" added Amanda Earnest
"SPENCER IS MY MAYOR" shared kimleibovitch with excitement.

However, Doug Herman, a representative for Mayor Karen Bass's campaign, dismissed Spencer Pratt's candidacy and reflected on his past actions:

“It’s no shock that in advance of his imminent book release, a reality TV ‘villain’ who once staged a fake divorce to boost ratings and spent the last summer spewing post-fire misinformation and disinformation to pump up his social media following, would now announce he’s running for mayor,” he shared.

The Hills was a normal reality TV show following Lauren Conrad until Spencer Pratt joined the cast in 2007. He began dating Conrad’s best friend, Heidi Montag. Over the years, Pratt has feuded with everyone from fellow reality TV stars to Today's Al Roker, as per a report shared by Nicki Swift.

As per a report shared by Entertainment Weekly, Pratt once wished that he would be the biggest reality TV villain and not just one of them.

“My only regret is I didn’t go far enough,I think if I had gone farther, I’d still be on TV and I’d be somebody that people needed in their lives. I feel like I just put one foot in the villain door, and I should have gone to the max. Simon Cowell, he’s the most famous a—hole in the world! How did I not surpass him?”

One of Spencer Pratt's initial controversies commenced in 2010 when he was a part of a fake divorce with Heidi. As per a report shared by People Magazine, fans and Montag’s own former costars from The Hills initially expressed doubts as they weren't sure if the separation was legitimate or another publicity stunt. As per the report shared by Nicki Swift, the separation, however, was fake as the couple had found out then that The Hills was being canceled.

The couple had come out clean and shared that the whole ordeal was a publicity stunt. According to a press release they sent to Life & Style (via The Huffington Post).

It was reported that there was an interest in a series covering their split from British TV network ITV, so Spencer Pratt and Heidi splashed down cash to move their act to Costa Rica. However, that deal fell through, and soon after, they called off the divorce proceedings and reunited.

"The divorce was real — just the idea behind it was different than most people's. Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi's career going because everyone hated me so much. Look at Sandra Bullock, her divorce from Jesse James was the best thing to happen to her image," shared Spencer

Why Native American groups spoke out against Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag:

The controversies didn't stop at the fake divorce. Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag later made headlines for being ignorant of Native American culture, as per a report shared by the New York Daily News on April 1, 2010. Multiple Native American groups had expressed their frustration and disappointment in the couple's announcement of changing their names in an effort to become

“more in-tune with our spirituality.”

Spencer Pratt and Montag had named themselves White Wolf and Running Bear, respectively. A representative from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota responded to the couple’s decision, saying,

“Continued stereotyping such as this by people ignorant of our traditional ways is very disrespectful and only hurts our efforts to curtail these stereotypes.”

Additionally, a spokesperson for the National Indian Education Association also shared that

“they have taken an inaccurate stereotypical approach to enhance their public image which is offensive to our diverse American Indian cultures.”

However, now that Spencer Pratt is stepping into a new role, it leaves Los Angeles citizens to decide what comes next.
