According to a recent article by US Weekly, actor Joaquin Phoenix's car was stolen outside his Los Angeles residence. According to TMZ, on April 28, one of Phoenix's workers noticed that Phoenix's Volvo SUV was not parked outside his house. US Weekly reported that the worker contacted law enforcement and filed a police report for the missing vehicle.
Phoenix was reportedly absent from his home at the time of the incident. It has not been confirmed whether his wife, Rooney Mara, and their children were at home during the incident.
The LAPD is currently investigating the case.
According to Parade, whether the car was parked on the street or on Phoenix's property at the time of the robbery is unknown. The car was a 2022 Volvo SUV worth $60,000. As noted by Parade, a report has been filed, and the police are investigating the case, but no arrests have been made. The publication mentions that for now, it is most likely that the car hasn't been recovered and that the police have no suspects or evidence in the case currently.
About Joaquin Phoenix's last project
As per US Weekly, Phoenix has maintained a relatively low profile after the release of The Joker: Folie à Deux in 2024. The movie featured Phoenix redefining his role as Arthur (Joker) alongside Lady Gaga reprising her character of Harley Quinn.
In an interview with Esquire, Phoenix told the publication that he loved the idea of a challenge while working on the sequel, noting something special about the first movie in which he starred as Joker.
"There was a part of me that was reluctant. There was something so special about the first experience and I didn’t want to taint that in any way, but I also loved the idea of a challenge, the idea of continuing the story but finding different tones to play with."
He further spoke about including music and dance in the movie and exploring more dimensions of his character.
“And we started talking about music and the idea of performance really around the time of the… I don’t even know if the movie had been released yet or if it had just been released, but we started talking about performance, literally a show, like a live show. There was still a lot more to explore, I thought, with the character. I didn’t want to give it up. And so I was excited, and I was nervous, and everything one could feel, I think.”
He told the publication that he also had to undergo a physical transformation for the sequel.
"I am not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that. But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time,” he recalled during a Venice International Film Festival press conference in September 2024.
Although the movie Joker became highly acclaimed and performed well at the box office, the sequel flopped. Although Joker earned Phoenix his first Academy Award, the sequel faced criticism due to its uneven tone and confusing ending.
