More details as Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner pass away
Rob Reiner was born on March 6, 1947, into a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York. His parents were the renowned comedian, writer, and producer Carl Reiner and actress-singer Estelle Reiner.
Carl was best known for creating The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 to 1966, and won multiple Emmy awards. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 98. His most popular films as a director were All of Me, Oh God, and The Jerk.
Reiner’s mother, Estelle Reiner, was of Romanian-Jewish descent and supported her husband's career while raising their family. She was known for her famous line “I'll have what she's having” in Rob Reiner's When Harry Met Sally.
Rob Reiner followed in his father's footsteps by entering the entertainment industry as an actor, director, producer and activist. As a child, he idolized his father and often felt the pressure to match his 12 Emmys and success.
Initially raised in the Bronx, Rob Reiner moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1959. He went to Beverly Hills High School with Albert Brooks and Richard Dreyfuss. After high school, Reiner apprenticed at Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania, performing in summer stock. He later attended the University of California from 1964 to 1966, where he helped to found an improv group, The Session.
Rob Reiner landed small roles on shows like Batman, The Andy Griffith Show, and Wagon Train, and wrote for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour with Steve Martin. However, he got his big break in 1971 when he was cast as Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the sitcom All in the Family.
Reiner then transitioned into directing after achieving success in All in the Family. His first project was a TV film titled Sonny Boy. He later directed Likely Stories, and Vol. 1. Reiner then collaborated with Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest to make This is Spinal Tap.
He co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment in 1987, producing blockbusters such as The Shawshank Redemption, Jerry Maguire, and The Green Mile. He also made the hit sitcom, Seinfeld. He was also a liberal activist who produced documentaries like Shock and Awe on the Iraq War and hosted podcasts.
