Is Britney Spears at VMAs? What we know as Sabrina Carpenter performance draws Popstar comparison

Sabrina Carpenter paid homage to Britney Spears's iconic 2001 look at this year's MTV VMAs.

The Espresso singer, 26, took to the stage at the September 7 show to deliver a performance in an embellished fringe top complementary miniskirt, which she later tore off to reveal a bedazzled bra halter top and sequinned shorts paired over shiny tights. The look was a reference to Spears' Bob Mackie look, which she wore during her Dream Within a Dream Tour.

Fans have since begun wondering if the iconic songstress, 43, was at the awards show to witness the homage. However, much to the dismay of many, she was not. In a new post on Instagram, she confirmed that she was at home, having her "own girl party in the bathroom !!!" She told her fans she had a sushi date planned with someone, but "the guy was absolutely horrible."

Just last year, Britney Spears took shots at Sabrina Carpenter's MTV VMA performance in September. At the time, she took to Instagram to share a video of herself reflecting on the songstress' performance of “Taste.”

“I didn’t watch the VMAs. . . but I did see stuff on my phone from YouTube of Sabrina Carpenter,” Spears said at the time. “Why is she kissing an alien on stage?”

While she did assert that she does “adore” Carpenter and loves her “to death,” she was confused by her decision to cozy up to an alien mid way through her performance:

“I didn’t understand that part,” Spears said. “Why didn’t she kiss a girl? That was weird.”

She then expressed surprise over Carpenter paying a tribute to her during the evening, before she started her set:

“This Sabrina girl said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was kind of cool,” the Grammy winner gushed. “I forget I’m famous sometimes.” She went on, “I’m a mom. . . I’m kind of old, but that was kind of cool. This Sabrina girl. . . Carpenter. . . Thanks! That’s cool! She made me cool!”

She was referring to Carpenter lip-syncing the iconic monologue from “Oops!… I Did It Again," seconds before she took to the stage.

People Magazine has also reported that Britney Spears, who last attended the VMAs in 2016, is "never due to perform" at the show again, despite rumors that a comeback may be imminent.
