Kai Cenat is making headlines for announcing the names of winners in two categories on his Twitch stream, while backstage, ahead of the AMAs on Monday night, May 28.
In clips circulating on X, the Dean of his own Streamer University can be seen accepting the cards that bore the names before waving them in front of the camera as an "easter egg" for his fans. He then announced the winners for ‘Social Song of the Year’ and ‘Collaboration of the Year’, with Doechii and Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars winning, respectively.
Fans are now dubious, with many questioning if it was even allowed for him to do that. Scores online think he may have violated some rules, such as this user who probed:
"Is this even allowed??"
The comments didn't end there:
"This is so unserious and iconic at the same time," someone quipped.
"This is so embarrassing. What happened to announcing these awards on stage?" another pointed out.
"The fact the amas use to be one of the highest award show full of A listers and now it’s a khia fest and they even letting streamers announce awards like wtf-" one more chimed in.
Here's how the rest of X is reacting:
"The AMAs have actually lost all respectability omg this is sad," one user opined.
"Wow, they got streamers announcing awards on Twitch now," someone else noted.
"Influencers like him have tanked award shows," yet another claimed.
"Kai making the awards even more fun to watch!!" someone on X defended the streamer.
Many users felt like Kai Cenat's actions went against the integrity and reputation of the awards ceremony, with some even dubbing his actions shameful.
SZA praises Kai Cenat for his work
During this year's AMAs, Kai Cenat made headlines in more ways than one. He presented the favorite female R&B artist to SZA, who, in turn, appreciated him for his latest entrepreneurial venture with Streamer University. Right as he hugged her for her feat and began walking off the stage, the songstress took a moment to laud him:
"Tell them about Streamer University,” SZA urged Cenat, adding: "Congrats to Kai!"
For the unversed, enrollment for the course began this month, which promises to train aspiring content creators in the art of making it big. It saw 120 influencers come together, and was held at the University of Akron. On X, the Twitch streamer described the course as an
“All-inclusive trip paid to where all creators will be living on a college campus for FREE and just enjoying getting content in general."
Those interested had to sign up via a Google Docs form, which had questions like “Can you bite your elbow?,” “How many jumping jacks can you do?,” and “Which planet has the most moons in the solar system?”
It remains unclear if Kai Cenat's Streamer University was a one-off or if he will bring it back next year.
