Is God Is is an upcoming film in the dark comedy genre, and it's directed by Aleshea Harris. She is adapting it from her namesake play that had won the Relentless Award from the American Playwriting Foundation. Its official synopsis, as per Letterboxd, is

Is God Is finally gets a release date

The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Is God Is will be released across cinema halls on May 15, 2026, by Orion Pictures, which is a part of Amazon MGM Studios. The release date coincides with the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, but it's unclear if the film will be screened at the festival or not. It's the directorial debut of Aleshea Harris, who has adapted the story from her eponymous play. She has also written the screenplay.

The film is about Virgo (played by Kara Young) and Kindred (Mallori Johnson), who are twin sisters and are African-American in ethnicity. When they were toddlers, the duo suffered severe burns due to a fire, which left permanent marks on them. The story then moves forward to when they are 21 years old and their bedridden mother tasks them to kill their father. She reveals that he is responsible for their burn scars. The entire film revolves around their quest for revenge and the things that happen to them along the way.

Other cast members of the film include Sterling K. Brown, Mykelti Williamson, Vivica A. Fox, Erika Alexander, Josiah Cross, and Janelle Monáe. The film is produced by Kishori Rajan and Tessa Thompson for Viva Maude, along with Janicza Bravo, Riva Marker, and Harris. Kenneth Yu, Nicole King, and Stacy O'Neil are serving as executive producers.

Right after its Broadway premiere in 2018, Is God Is attracted the attention of several film financiers. Earlier, A24 and Scott Rudin were also attached to the project. Harris received praise for the play and won $45,000 in cash. After years of delay, the film has finally taken off, and it will be released in the summer of 2026.
